I am actually in the minority of people that prefer the Hobbit to follow up The Lord of The Rings.
Simply put The Hobbit is a children's story but it is a much more rounder and and a much more satisfying, simpler story with none of the 'story within stories' of the LOTR and of course none of the dull bits of the Rings.
I know this will alienate a lot of LOTRs fans but that's my view.
This is an excellent abridged version of the story and the illustrations are first class.
It can be re read and enjoyed by any fan of the written Hobbit.
First and foremost Bilbo looks like a hobbit.
If you read Tolkein's description he really is spot on.
And as with the depiction of Hobbits, so the Dwarfs, Trolls and the like are true to Tolkein's descrription from the book the Hobbit and not the Film version of Lord of the Rings,
To this reviewer's eyes they are excellent.
I also suspect that if the trolls, orcs and their like were depicted as from the film this would scare lots of children who can read and enjoy this wonderful tale.
Nothing important is left from the tale and it moves along a a cracking pace.
Jewel bright drawings are accompanied by excellent foonotes that read like a good narrator to convey the meaning and nuances really well.
It can re read and loved by any child or adult.
The reading age is around an 11 year old so can be readily enjoyed from the reading angle by a bright 8 year old. Of course it may be enjoyed by any child that loves graphic or comic novels.
There is nothing here that will cause nightmares. So if you are a concerned parent you can rest assured.
(but maybe a quick flick through just to make doubly sure perhaps?)
All in all?
A really wonderful adaptation of the Hobbit.
My daughter in law informed me that the morning it arrived, he started reading before breakfast, was dragged away from it to go to school, and finished it on return.
My hope is that he now progresses to the other version I bought him - but at least he has an idea of Tolkien, and was gripped by the story.
It is a great re-write of the original Hobbit book. Brilliant!
Well he absolutely loved it, bedtime it was all he wanted to read, although the words are still very advanced the comic book format was really great for his understanding. And my step son enjoyed it as well ;)
Fast delivery and a book we will read over and over as he gets older. Great seller.
