The Hitcher is a re-make of the original film which was released in 1986.

The story follows a couple (Jim and Grace) who offer a lift to a hitchhiker (played by Sean Bean). They soon realise he is a psycho when he holds a knife to Graces head. They manage to kick him out of the car and think that's the last the have seen of him. Unfortunately for them, things go from bad to worse, as they soon realise the killer will not disappear quietly from their lives.

Not having seen the original I can't compare the two. However, watching this version as a film in its own right, it is an effective horror/thriller with strong performances from all involved. The couple portray the frightened victims, who are desperate to survive, very well. Sean Bean doesn't have to flex his acting muscles too much, but he plays the role of psycho killer extremely convincingly.

The action is at times very violent but, apart from one genuinely shocking scene, it doesn't end up being as sick as other films from this genre, (for example Wolf Creek or Hostel). There are a few bits that will make you jump but it doesn't have the sustained terror of some recent horrors (again Wolf Creek). The pace is kept high throughout which means the film never starts to drag. The two lead characters are likeable enough which helps you have some sympathy in their plight to evade the killer.

Overall fans of the horror/thriller genre will find something to like here. With strong performances and a fast pace it is definitely a well above average chiller.

I really love Sean Bean as a actor but he can't pull off a american accent to save his life, this dreadful remake of a decent 1986 movie of the same name makes no effort to add anthing to the original story.I just cant belive they thought it could be a box office hit. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this crap.

I'm always a little sceptical when watching remakes as generally they tend to be appalling but `The Hitcher' is an exception to the rule as it turned out to be one of the best thrillers that I've seen - remake or otherwise.

The film is about a young couple who take a trip to go to a Spring break party and pick up a hitchhiker along the way. After he pulls a knife out on them, they literally kick him out of the car but he keeps on coming back for more, killing anyone else who gets in his way in the process.

This has to be one of the most fast-paced, exciting, scary and edge-of-my-seat thrillers that I can remember. I watched the original years ago and really liked it but I can't remember feeling the high level of suspense and excitement that I felt when watching this version (I must watch the original again sometime). I always thought Sean Bean wouldn't be scary at all but in this he is absolutely terrifying. In some (most) scenes you I knew he was going to be there and it still didn't fail to make me jump when he popped up!

The special effects are stunning with some amazing car chases where they get flipped, blown up and smashed to pieces. It is also fairly gory, again with some very realistic effects, but doesn't go over the top when it comes to the level of gore shown. It is a little farfetched at times and there are a fair few plot holes, but all-in-all this is a very enjoyable film where the action and intense tension and thrills don't stop for a second.

Highly recommended for fans of the original and new-comers alike. If you imagine a film that is a mix between Duel or Road Kill and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you begin to imagine what this film is like.

This is the remake of the Rutger Hauer classic, about John Ryder, the titular character, and his unknown rationale for killing road users.

This time, the very good Sean Bean plays Ryder, but there is a little twist in the movie as girl power comes along, and Jim Halsey takes a back seat in the action.

Michael bay is really on to a good thing with his Platinum Dunes company. he regurgitates classic or cult horror movies, puts good looking people in the victim roles, and happily watches newbies who have never seen the originals, or haters who want to criticise the film, line his wallet with ticket fees.

Luckily, i'm one of those rare people who don't mind if these films are re-made. It's not going to affect my life, and i like to see just what has been done to justify a re-make.

Bean is excellent as Ryder, though he doesn't have the mysticism of Hauer, he is still menacing and strange enough to own the film.

It's certainly more violent than the original, and more flashy and better made, but not as tense. there are some shot for shot scenes in the film, and the script is a lot poorer, but it's dumb fun, and good enough to be one of the better re-makes of recent times.

It doesn't go on for too long, and the slim running time benefits the film, as it never really becomes boring, but we never really focus on the two victims long enough to really care.

A good Friday night movie, but instantly forgettable.
