There is a lot of bonus material included, such as commentaries and the original trailers. The discs included are exactly the same as the individual releases (so in rare cases it may be cheaper to buy each movie individually). But on the whole, this is a nice set and a good value for 7 entertaining Hitchcock films.

The second volume of classic Hitchcock films starts off with horror classic The Birds which sees birds attack people in a small town. Tense, well acted and terrific though the effects on the birds themselves perhaps look dated now. Vertigo is another James Stewart film. Another masterpiece and one of Hitchcock's best films this sees a detective terrified of heights become obsessed with a woman he thought was dead. Marnie starring Sean Connery and Tippi Hedren sees a man become obsessed with a woman accused of being a theif. A slow but very well acted and tense film. Topaz sees a plot about an attempt to uncover a spy ring, Torn Curtain starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews another tense well acted thriller about spies trying to escape back to America, Frenzy sees a man accused of being a serial killer while Hitchcock's final film, Family Plot is about a couple of con artists. Gripping, tense and well acted films all highly reccommended and looking fantastic on bluray. Even though Frenzy and Family Plot are perhaps 2 of Hitchcock's weakest films they are still both fine thrillers.

Essential and the price was excellent even though I was rebuying Vertigo and Birds. As most know, the transfers are highly variable. Pleasantly surprised by the PQ of Topaz and Frenzy vis a vis what I'd heard. Torn Curtain not as impressive as advertised. Family Plot bad. Marnie ghastly, though some of its problems may be traced to the source and may in fact reflect deliberate choices by the makers.

I wish Universal had spend a bit more effort on this set; these are among the most important films ever made. Unfortunately only The Birds has been noticeably cleaned up, it looks cleaner and brighter than the DVD release with decent detail improvement. Close-up of Tippi Hedren are still problematically fuzzy. Family Plot looks terrible, frankly: dirty, worn and grainy and should to be recalled in its present state. The other films fall in between the two extremes. The most important film in the set is Vertigo which is slightly cleaned up from the 1996 optical restoration, but falls short from what could be achieved with a 4K digital scan/restoration. At least they cleaned up the audio to fix the distracting foley effects in the previous DVD.

I have always been a Hitchcock fan and to get some of his films on blu-ray was great. I bought this during the yearly Amazon sale and love it.
