This lavish costume drama in the grand old traditions of the BBC is a fresh and vivid dramatisation of Henry Fielding's ribald and rowdy tale. It follows the life of young Tom, who, as a new-born child, is taken in by the kindly Squire Allworthy. Reaching adulthood, Tom (Max Beesley) discovers a penchant for the ladies and he is thrown from his home after a dalliance with a local girl. However, his real love Sophia (Samantha Morton) marries Tom's loathsome cousin, and so he sets out on a series of adventures (and misadventures) to win her back.
A ribald and rowdy romp through the mansions and taverns of Georgian England. Henry Fielding's fallen hero bed-hops his way out of a good home and almost into a hangman's noose, via a series of misadventures and misunderstandings. This big budget production boasts a strong supporting cast featuring the likes of June Whitfield and John Sessions.

This is one of the best TV Dramas of a long time. I remember it a long time ago - ten years ago (cripes) and I loved it. We had it on DVD and I've seen it so often they're a bit ropey now so I am more then pleased.
This is quite different to most BBC dramas you might be used to - it has a bouncy robust storyline full of good humour and brilliant acting from a top cast including Max Beesely (Bodies) and the pretty Samantha Morton (The Minority Report, The Libertine).
I'd truly reccomend this one to you as one of the very best dramas the BBC have ever made. I look forward to watching it again!
This is a bawdy romp of a series with a rambling plot full of coincidences, taking in runaway women, arranged marriages, illicit couplings, and cunning plots. At its heart are Tom Jones and Sophia Weston, childhood sweethearts, kept apart by all manner of devices.
Having Fielding as a to-the-camera commentator to the film works very well, and is a good substitute for his direct speaking to us in the book.
Overall, this is classic BBC with high production values, great acting, writing and directing - and a very funny, moral tale where we can rest assured that the baddies will get their come-uppance, and the goodies their just rewards. Great fun!
The entire cast played their parts exceptionally well but my ultimate accolade must go to Brian Blessed, surely the perfect Squire Western.
Full credit also to John Sessions who as Henry Fielding hit just the right note. I did not find him at all obtrusive, on the contrary his interruptions were both timely and amusing.
In answer to the comments about the excessive length of this production perhaps we should ask Mr Fielding to return and condense his masterwork for the more impatient among us?
I saw the original Tom Jones, starring Albert Finney and Susannah York, on its release in 1963. I very much enjoyed it then and now have the DVD. However the Beeb's version is more entertaining, informative and faithful to the original work.
An edition to be savoured, a real classic.

great romp, fun about the corrupt rich and hard working maligned poor - it's a communist tract IMO. :)Published 9 months ago by Amazon Customer

A superb adaptation of an amazing book. Hugely better than the very disappointing Tom Finney film. Keeps largely to the original text and super performances. Read morePublished 14 months ago by Jonkers
