Product description

Product Description

This lavish costume drama in the grand old traditions of the BBC is a fresh and vivid dramatisation of Henry Fielding's ribald and rowdy tale. It follows the life of young Tom, who, as a new-born child, is taken in by the kindly Squire Allworthy. Reaching adulthood, Tom (Max Beesley) discovers a penchant for the ladies and he is thrown from his home after a dalliance with a local girl. However, his real love Sophia (Samantha Morton) marries Tom's loathsome cousin, and so he sets out on a series of adventures (and misadventures) to win her back.

Synopsis

A ribald and rowdy romp through the mansions and taverns of Georgian England. Henry Fielding's fallen hero bed-hops his way out of a good home and almost into a hangman's noose, via a series of misadventures and misunderstandings. This big budget production boasts a strong supporting cast featuring the likes of June Whitfield and John Sessions.

It is a gem, based on the novel Tom Jones by Henry Fielding, picaresque journey of a foundling who is good and honest by nature but inexperienced and due to this fact forced to sin by concatenation of circumstances. He often inadvertently ends up in bed with women, for example, although he wants to be faithful to his beloved Sophia. Because of foul scheme by his half-brother Blifil Tom is forced to leave the home of his guardian and has to go trough many ordeals before the truth of his origin and stainless character is revealed. The novel is brought to the screen perfectly. The story is told by omniscient narrator and lacks no comical elements. According to ideas of the age of enlightenment the rational and prudent person is also kind and just, which holds good mostly for the middle classes. Especially wicked an without morals is, of course, the aristocracy. If you want to have a good laugh, the simplest solution is this series. It is hilarious. The performance of Brian Blessed in a role of Sophia's father, irritable uneducated squire without manners, matchmaking for his daughter with help of his cunning sister, is unforgettable. Highly recommended.

A lighthearted romp, not to be taken too seriously. It is frequently OTT and sometimes descends into farce, but is no less enjoyable for all of that. Vastly entertaining with the required happy ending.

Fantastic by far the best of this type of drama, if it were a film you would expect a good few oscars. Brian Blessed gives the performance of his life with Francis de la Tour as his sister. Samantha Morton, Is this the greatest performance of any actress, actor ever? Having Kathy Burke as her maid and sidekick is inspired. This is quite simply, absolutely superb.

This is a super DVD - if you like period dramas with a bit of raunchiness and comedy then this is for you! As it was shown on TV in episodes, you can choose to watch it in several sittings which is also rather fun. Some famous actors appear and give stellar performances.

I have been waiting for this production to come along on DVD for some while - having owned it on VHS. It is BBC drama at it's very best - the production values are of the highest order. Casting and acting are all superb. Brian Blessed is born to the role of Squire Western - a virtuosi performance in fact (to the point of overacting!). To that I must add the wonderful Kathy Burke as Sophie's maidservant, Honour; who virtually steals the show from Samantha Morton. The pace of the story never flags and the outside locations are absolutely gorgeous. Using John Sessions as 'Henry Fielding' who often pops up to add comments or details to advance the storyline is a stroke of genius - especially as he appears to be mostly invisible to the rest of the characters - adding to the comedy... Highly recommended - I can't imagine it being done any better!
