This is a really well written and interesting book. If you are new to the subject of Spanish history, this is a very enjoyable introduction indeed! It covers pretty much everything, from Prehistory to the present, so it is very useful either for students or people who just want to get a good general knowledge of the subject, like me.

This is a good history of Spain (I wanted to find out more about the country as my daughter is going to live there for a few years), and this book introduced me to the basic history - from prehistoric times, through the Islamic invasion, the crusades, and then... just an endless list of monarchs. King this did that and King so and so did something else.
There was no detail, no description of the times and I didn't get a feel for how the average Spaniard actually lived. The Spanish Armada is dismissed in a paragraph - maybe the book is too small to pack in this sort of detail.

I may have been spoilt by Peter Ackroyd's recent Foundation: The History of England Volume 1 (History of England Vol 1) - which is a wonderful history book - full of detail (and very few Kings!).

Disappointing book - I shall have to look for something with less of Gove-Style facts and more Ackroyd-Style detail.

I am a student studying Spanish and I found this a really useful and accessible read. It covers a lot of ground and helped me to get a better understanding of the main events in Spain's history. I would definitely recommend this book to other students, and anyone else looking to learn a bit more about Spain!

Simon Barton's book is an essential read for all students embarking upon a journey into the history of Spain. The depth of his knowledge and expertise is evident on each and every page! I have finally found a book that provides me with the information and guidance I need to converse confidently with my fellow students, (and even my terrifying lecturer), in class.

Enjoyed this book, which I read whilst on holiday in Spain.
Yes, it does get a bit confusing between 750 and 1500, but that's the way it was at that time, with 5 or 6 kingdoms changing constantly.
If you are not an academic and just want a better idea of Spain's history this is a good read.
