Format: Paperback
This book is essential for anyone interested in the history of nursing in the UK. It is also of relevance to women's history and labour history. It looks at the role the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) played in supporting the professional advancement of nursing and improving the working lives of nurses between 1916-1990.

The chapters are:

1. Foundations, 2. Consolidation, 3. The struggle for influence 1930-45, 4. Nursing and the National Health Service 1945-50, 5. The work and training of a nurse, 6. The 1960s: a decade of discontent, 7. A professional union, 8. Nurses, managers and politicians.

It is a well researched book and the authors include notes with the sources they have used. It is illustrated with many black and white photos. Recommended.
