I bought this book as a possible reference work to a planned sequel to my own Cold War espionage novel 'Fire & Ice' and I was not disappointed. The book cleverly runs the gauntlet of being, on the one hand detailed and comprehensive and, on the other, covering the entire history of spying and counter spying from Egypt, Greece and Ancient Rome, right up to the War on Terror with its cyber-spies and satellite technology. Read it from cover to cover as a fascinating narrative or dip in and out for details on everything from Wellington's code breakers and Mata Hari, to Bletchley Park, the Cambridge Spies and spying from space.

This is an excellent history book which recounts the past from a different perspective. I really like the way the stories are told and how the facts are presented.
