A timely and very well written text that speaks to an intricate history of this small country. A history of entangled relationships with Tibet, the author makes it very clear that in terms of identity it is wrong of the west to conflate Bhutan with Tibet. The relationship with India and the rest of the world as Bhutan finds complete independence under the monarchy is also a most fascinating part of this history. There is much more that could be said, but anyone wanting an insiders view of what it might mean to be Bhutanese and even that claim does no justice to the complexity of that country.
