"Saveur "Favorite Food Books of 2013 "British chef Heston Blumenthal's new book, "Historic Heston""-- "a lavish, beautiful volume, presented in a cloth-bound crimson slipcase -- plunders five centries of his country's cookbooks for the sake of culinary inspiration . . . There has never been a book like this. . . I could happily spend several days with this book and not even enter the kitchen." - Jeffrey Steingarten, "Vogue""" "It's nearly impossible to sum up the awesomeness of this exquisitely packaged amalgamation of photographic still lifes, illustrations, and historic recipes. 5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazingly researched and unique tome from a master 21 Jan. 2014

I read this book cover to cover just like I did Heston's Fat Duck book. I am sure I will cook a few items here and there from it starting with the "meat fruit" in the shape of a mandarin using chicken liver. The strength here though is not in recipes you want to whip up for a quick family dinner. Rather, it is a remarkable record of how Heston Blumenthal researched historic British recipes going back hundreds of years and then documenting how he re-created them at Fat Duck or his other restaurant Dinner. I would be remiss not to mention the "art" of this volume, from the sturdy attractive case to the psychedelic illustrations and the photographs of beautifully composed dishes. The writing is superb and clear with equal parts history lesson and culinary education.
5.0 out of 5 stars A cookbook to be enjoyed in and out of the kitchen 22 Dec. 2015

An absolutely gorgeous and ambitious book. The quality of the book is fantastic and worthy of the price. The recipes, photography and writing are simply gorgeous and worthy of Blumenthal's reputation. I have enjoyed the book while sitting at my dining room table - the book is so physically large and beautiful, it's just not something that I would bring into my kitchen. When I do finally attempt one of the recipes I will either photocopy or take a picture of the recipe on my iPad. If you have an interest in culinary history, British history or are a lover or quality cookbooks, this one is truly special.

This was a Christmas gift to our daughter who had eaten at Heston's restaurant in London in June. She loved the book as a memento of a great meal.

Beautiful... the historic documents are as fascinating as Heston's modernist interpretations.
