2CD set of the very best of Rory Erickson and those other "acidized country boys" playing psychedelic Buddy Holly riffs. Featuring 'You're Gonna Miss Me', 'Reverberation (Doubt)' and 'Tried to Hide'.

It comes packaged in an eye-catching sleeve that uses the same design as their excellent debut LP The Psychedelic Sounds Of.... However, the execution of this compilation could have been much better. The sound quality is pretty poor at times, with songwriter Tommy Hall's electric jug playing often buried in a muddy mix, and too many of the selections that feature here - including their most famous track ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ – come from the erroneously-named Live, rather than the original studio albums. That 1968 LP was rightly dismissed, in a 5 out of 10 review for the Allmusic guide, as “an often laughable collection of unreleased studio recordings and album cuts overdubbed with crowd noises".
to many of the songs on this album are taken from the fake 'live' album where the studio versions were soaked in reverb and bookended with canned applause. The compilers obviously had access to the superior album cuts but for some bizzare reason thought not to use them.
No attempt has been made to improve the sound and many of the tracks are repeated.
It's OK but you get what you pay for.
The 13ths' big picture can really be catched with this compilation. And the booklet is very complete. A good introduction and perhaps exit, given than only few rarities or bootlegs may be added to the collection of this great -and crazy- band. The highlight include the famous "You're gonna miss me", "She lives (in a time of her own", two takes of "Roller-Coaster", "Slip inside this house", Dylan's "(It's all over) Baby Blue" - beautiful version-, "Splash 1" and nice material from other members of the band, like Sutherland's "Street Song".
