I have just finished reading this book and I have really enjoyed it, as I have enjoyed other titles from this author. My only quibble is that it is never really explained how the hero got to this alternative world, but nonetheless it is a good read.

Britain has often flirted with Fascism, perhaps a natural consequence of the enduring monarchy. This book weakly explores the consequences in Britain of a German victory in WW I. Simply put, the Empire is governed by a series of military leaders who are approved by the King. Domestic control is exercised by different local and national armed police forces and there is an Imperial form of the CIA. So far, so interesting, but then the details start to suggest a penny-dreadful adventure novel similar to Arthur Conan Doyle's various Victorian novels, amongst them Tarzan. The society does not feel "real" and the plot is unconvincing, centering on a set of determined homicidal left-wing ideologues who inexplicably have excellent murdering skills but cannot maintain the physical security of a remote conclave even their lives depended upon it, and, as it turns out, it does! Boyish is the action, stilted and formal is the language, amateurish is the plot. Don't buy it, except to compare against better works.
