About the author

Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) has been called 'the greatest Briton'. An international statesman, orator, biographer, historian, author and Nobel Prize winner, his works remain in print with the world's leading publishers.
Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, Winston spent several years in the army before becoming a newspaper correspondent and then an MP. His cabinet positions included First Lord of the Admiralty at the outbreak of the First World War and later Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Churchill became Prime Minister in 1940 and for five years led Britain though its 'finest hour'. Defeated in the July 1945 election, he was Leader of the Opposition until re-elected Prime Minister in 1951. He was knighted in 1953, the same year he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He stepped down as Prime Minister in 1955 and remained an MP until 1964.

At the outset, opening the cover, I wasn't at all excited about reading this book, nor much interested in the subject-matter. The pleasant style in which it is written quickly carried me into it, there is a quality in the language which is Churchillian, and the facts, extracts and comments blend easily into the flow.
Don't expect to be popular while you read this book; your attention will be held by it, with moments when you look up to interrupt your wife or partner with extracts from it.
So, on the quality of the writing, absolutely excellent.
On the subject matter, now there's the big surprise. The book does not grandly praise him, or put him on a pedestal; far from it. This is a book about a tangible human being with great qualities and all the human ambiguities too.
You also learn much about three generations of Churchills, and the conduct of many major events of the last century.
Expect to laugh & cry while you read it.
My congratulations to the author, for what that is worth.
My apologies to his father, I fear I paid not enough attention to him when he was with us. Which is my loss, not his.
