I came across this book today at the library with my nearly three year old. As a writer and a reader I enjoyed and admired this book. Brilliantly silly, witty, and zany, and laugh out loud funny for me (an alleged grown up) and my toddler. I borrowed it so I could reread it and show it to my 9 year old who I thought would also find it amusing enough to read once or twice!

An authorial exercise in word play. Okay story but you won't want to read this more than once or twice because the words will get annoying after a while.

Jeanne Willis has done much better work - 'I'm sure I saw a dinosaur' - for instance. That IS worth buying as a great rhyming book with a super strong story.

A rhyming book and a whole lotta silly fun! Hippopotamus has a spotamus on her bottomus. but whatever could it be?

"It's measels," says the Weasel. "You sat in a breezle and caught a diseasel."

"It's Hippopox!" says the Fox. But Beaver says it's Jungle Fever, Lion says it's Hippolumps, Shrew believes it's Potomumps and if Rhino says it's Hippoflu, really, no one has a clue. Oh, dear, what will spotty hippo do?

She'll scrub her skin with icky soot, from "..noseymus to footimus, but the spotamus stayed put."

She'll get a shot from Croc the Doc but despite the "perfect shotamus" - rot! - the shot's for naught!

"It's a blister," says her sister.

For goodness' sake, "You clottamus!" says the acerbated Snake. "Cut out chippochoccomus, eat lettuce for a week." Still "... the spot on Hippo's bottomus stuck firmly to her cheek."

Will the spotty on her botty ever, ever leave? The ending may delight you, and then again may not ('cause it's a yecchy fulsome finish to that stubborn sticky spot!)

HOWEVER, it's a lively book and it's hilarious and good enough to forgive the ending. On a scale of 0 to the full 5-ottomus, I give it the maximottamus. (Plus, Ross' illustrations are the perfect complimottamus.)

But my 3 year old grandson wasn't very taken by it. I still read it to him occasionally though, when he stays the night, but he has books he prefers more. I suppose books are very subjective - I like the rhymes, my grandson is not too bothered about that!

This is the only children's book ever to cause me to have tears stream down my face with laughter.
My three year old son was also highly entertained due to the mention of the word 'bottom' and 'bum'.
So, clever and creative. The sort of book I wish I had the genius to write myself, but know I would fall very short.
Highly, highly recommended by myself and most importantly, my son, who requests it over and over.

My daughter and I love reading this book and it has become a firm bedtime favourite. The drawings are great with lots of things to look at and the text is wonderful.
