I second the motion: this is one of the best, or the best, performances of Mathis der Maler. The virtuosity of the Boston Symphony during this period under Steinbergs direction is simply stunning, and Steinberg's approach sounds much like Hindemith's own reading from the '30s. Today, however, I prefer broader tempos and a more expansive approach: Levi's broadly paced reading on Telarc is combined with a first-rate Nobilissima Visione; Rickenbacher on Virgin directs the piece beautifully, if without the same degree of orchestral virtuosity; and Leonard Bernstein on DGG is also not to be passed up. Salonen on Sony is also exceptional, in warm, rich (but somewhat thick) sound.

This CD represents a good opportunity for everyone interested in modern German composers. It`s a good selection of works, composers and performers. However, the masterpiece is ,of course,"Mathis der Maller".This is the best performance of the symphony I know so far!The unique, rich sound of Boston Symphony Orchestra, especially the blissful sound of its brass section,is used in a fantastic way by the German conductor William Steinberg, who gives the music exactly the right "German"interpretation of Hindemith`s spirit. The quality of the recording is excellent. The dinamic contrast is huge, the technical precision is absolute. This is an indeed a first-class recording and performance!
