What a wonderful debut! It was dark, addictive and ultimately heart breaking. (Ruth Hogan, author of The Keeper of Lost Things)
Gripping and kept me guessing - and so emotionally true. (Sophie Kinsella)
Him is dark, gripping, original and totally heartbreaking. Clare Empson writes like a dream: taut and sophisticated, not a word wasted. I loved this book. (Francesca Jakobi, author of Bitter)
Addictive, elegant and pacey writing. Brideshead recalibrated by way of Big Little Lies. (Lex Coulton)
A compelling and unforgettable novel in which silence speaks louder than words and relationships are not what they seem. I was utterly gripped from the first sentence. (Elisa Lodato, author of An Unremarkable Body)
There are shades of Brideshead in this elegantly written novel that explores the devastating effects of a doomed love affair. A captivating read. (Karen Perry, author of Girl Unknown)
A dark love story. (Daily Mail)
Beautiful writing, tense atmosphere, a dazzling debut. (Lara Dearman)
Loved this gripping, brilliant, heart-breaking and thought-provoking book. (Karen Hamilton, author of The Perfect Girlfriend)

It's beautifully written, many elements resonate with my own life, and it brings back subtle memories of Donna Tartt's Secret History which is one of my all time favourites. HIM is now one of my favourite books and it's intense, addictive love caused me to create a new tag on my blog page.
For those who prefer to follow a genre to help choose what they read, ‘Him’ isn’t easily categorised: it’s an amalgam of suspense and romance with a psychological accent, a nuanced and contemporary love story. For me, it’s a tale of insecurities and jealousies, comingled with a dose of anguish for all concerned. The dramatis personae are very well-drawn; you will recognise the types but the author doesn’t overdo the empathy: several, even the assumed ‘victims’, are not particularly stand-up people. The extended cast is compelling, too, the reader is somehow drawn to them, in spite of their flaws.
I really recommend this book: please do read it well (I may have read it too quickly, it’s a bit of a page-turner), it’s an excellent debut and I look forward to what comes next from this author. Here’s also hoping that a smart TV producer picks this up and makes a decent drama; guided by good casting, this could make for great viewing.
