Important Own Voices YA story I hope everyone will read

One of the positives of 2020 is the number of Young Adult Fiction books I’ve read. Until this year, I’ve been more of an adult fiction (dare I even say OA) kinda girl, but as a result of judging the longlist for The Diverse Book Awards, I had the opportunity to read some amazing YA and I’m so pleased that this genre has opened up to me, despite the fact I’m most definitely NOT the target reader (I’m 40!).

I’ve always been a fan of coming-of-age stories in books and on the screen; stories that make me feel nostalgic for my teenage years and early 20s. What I love about fiction, though, is the opportunity to be able to transport into someone else’s experience, culture, place and era. Of course, not every book I read reflects my own memories, but there’s always an element, even if it’s only small, that provokes some nostalgia, and for me the most important thing about any book is that it makes me want to keep turning those pages. I read A LOT for my work and so when I read for pleasure it has to be really engaging.

Hijab & Red Lipstick by Yousra Imran is a fascinating, moving and compelling YA fiction story. It tells the tale of Sara who is forced to leave her life in London (there are some great 1990s/early 2000s references in there) to move to the Gulf with her family. I am not one for plot spoilers, so I’ll leave it there, but needless to say, things don’t go as planned for Sara.

There are some potentially triggering events, including sexual assault, in the book that I think are handled well, and it’s made clear in the book and on the cover that this is the case.

What I loved most about Sara’s story is that it showed one girl’s experience of living in a patriarchal society. This is an Own Voices story. It lets the reader into a world that may be unknown to them – the humanity, emotions and feelings showcased throughout are so raw and genuine and heartfelt. I was so emotionally attached to Sara and championed her all the way through. Her final words on how she came to live in London again and her thoughts on what had happened to her, and her choice about her religion, how she chose to dress and live her life, were so poignant.

I hope that this is a book that is widely read by lots of people from different backgrounds and cultures – but also ages. Yes, it’s YA fiction but that doesn’t mean only young adults can read it!

Yet Another Blogging Mummy!!!

A great story for young adult readers encompassing difficult subject matter

Disclosure. This post is a review of a book I was sent for free. All opinions are my own.

An insight into life as a young British Muslim woman growing up between London and the Middle East, this is a tale of a woman’s difficult quest to find herself, and an exclusive insight into life in countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, where people’s personal lives are rarely spoken about.

The book starts in London with Sara now aged 29 about to tell her life story for a documentary on TV. Her father Baba came to London from Cairo and married an English girl who had converted to Islam. He was very religious and had strict rules for Sara and her younger siblings Ahmed, Saffa and Abdullah. So no boyfriends and not even any English music, however Sara found that there are always ways to rebel.

But everything got even more strict when Sara was in Year 9 as her father got a new job and the family moved to the Gulf. There even magazine pictures and articles were censored before being put on the shelf. Sara thinks she can keep a relationship secret from her father, but she forgets about the itemised phone bill. Make-up is another area she comes to blows with her father over, he won’t even let her wear red lipstick at home, considering it sluttish. And so it continues from school to university and beyond. When will Sara be able to be herself?

A great story for young adult readers encompassing difficult subject matter, cleverly woven with the current day interludes, when Sara still wears her signature red lipstick.

Note does include rape scene, self-harm and sexual abuse.

The book opens with Sara as an adult talking to a journalist about her life. We then go back in time to when Sara was a teenager as her strict Egyptian father moves the family from the UK to the Gulf as he thinks they will have a better, safer life there than in a broken Britain.

Sara though just wants to be like the girls she knew growing up. She wants to be able to chat with the opposite sex, to wear clothes that don’t cover her whole body, and to put make-up on her face. Her father tells her everything is ‘haram’ Forbidden and if she steps out of line or dares to question him she is physically beaten.

The book is narrated by Sara who tells us about her life growing up and that of her family. Amongst the school friends, parties, etc there were some harrowing scenes, scenes where men think they can dominate women and women are the ones at fault for being raped or attacked.

Hijab and Red Lipstick was a poignant and hard read at times. Sometimes the content made my blood boil but I don’t want to get into my thoughts on the treatment of women in some parts of the world on here. Let’s just say I stand against all violence, whether that be aimed at men, women, or children. I also stand for equality.

The plot is heart-wrenching and I can see it being a tear-jerking novel for some. It must have been so hard for Sara, her sister, and her mother growing up. Sara though has a lovely spirit to her, she comes across as warm and loving, surprising given her upbringing.

The novel isn’t for the faint-hearted. It is emotional, it will have you wanting to throw the book across the room, not because of the writing – that’s amazing, but because of what this brave young woman went through.

My only criticism is with how it ended. I wanted to know more about Sara returning to the UK, how she did it, what her family thought about it, and how she felt now she was back living here. Essentially I wanted to know more.
