Michelle Khan, in her debut children's chapter book, has created a remarkable story with vivid characters, real-life situations, and positive message for young girls of all faiths. The story starts with a crisis: the girl must come up with a show-and-tell item for International Women's Day which represents the women in her life. Growing up in Los Angeles at an exclusive girl's academy, she is surrounded by the trappings of the West: television scripts, actresses, and high fashion yet none of it speaks to her identity as a young Muslim woman living with her widowed mother. As she reaches for her cultural and religious identities, a transformation takes place and she both asks and answers many questions about this mysterious garment and the how, why, and where it is worn. Recommended for girls ages 8 and up.
