Firstly, you have the RENEGADE VERSION (The Directors Cut) of Highlander 2, which has rarely been seen in the UK unless you have a Multi-Region Player that plays Region 1 discs. This version of Highlander 2 erases the frankly horrific memory of the pre-existing theatrical cut which was shown in cinemas.
The Director has now restored the movie to its full-length version, complete with re-cut dialogue - removing the suggestion that the immortals are from another planet - and added new effects and extra scenes making it a much better film. The reworked opening segment now has the style and appearance of a Dune movie, had one been made at that time, and this makes you actually look forward to the movie you are about to see; curious about the other changes that have been made to the picture. The immortal soldiers are now cast as warriors from the distant past exiled to the future, and the insertion of new special effects helps to communicate this idea. Though it still doesn't work as a sequel, and is hardly worthy to the original, it will make you sleep better (if you care about these things) with a feeling that a great injustice has been corrected.Read more ›
My three DVD box was very odd in that the styles of the DVD cases are different. The original highlander film is in the original cover style and The Quickening/The Sorcerer have had a matching cover makeover. Box did arrive sealed though.
The films themselves play fine, though the format seems to vary between DVDs which means that some play as a movie in a black box, whilst others go nicely to full screen.
Putting aside the mass disappointment that the sequels were to Highlander fans, the revamped Renegade version from 1995 in this box set is better than the original cinematic release. As others have noted, the alien planet Ziest story line has been dumped, and story is now that the Immortals are sent into the future to fight for the prize by priests rather then pursuing their bloody battle across their timeline. I would recommend though to see the 'best' Highlander 2 version, you buy the 2004 Special Addition -it's just as Renegade but with the CGI redone.
I've asked the seller to change the title to stop further disappointments from people not receiving Endgame. As this took two weeks to arrive, by which time I was champing at the bit to watch the Renegade version of Highlander II, I decided not to send this back and will get Endgame separately.
I've marked this as 'OK' on Amazon, as although disappointed I don't feel strongly enough to say "I don't like it".
I have seen them on TV before and knew what I was getting. Sound track is English. Hate the sub titles.
There is nothing on the menu options (play or select scene) to turn this off and the SUBTILE on/off button on my SONY blue ray controller is prevented from working by the DVD.
Both my wife and I have spent several stressful hours tring every DVD and Blue ray option we can find, without any success, the subtitles remain… :0(
I was unable to contact the Supplier to get some advice, so I am arranging the return of the product. It remains to be seen how long it takes to get my money back, but the time wasted on this product will never be recovered.
