Higher Ground is the follow-up to the Blind Boys Grammy-winning Spirit Of The Century, and it celebrates the holy side of secular songs in the hope of connecting with, as founding member Clarence Fountain said, "the generations that are behind us". Always alert to the potent message of God's mightiness, they exuberantly spiritualise the Stevie Wonder title track and Curtis Mayfield’s "People Get Ready", as well as choice picks from the songbooks of Prince ("The Cross"), George Clinton ("You And Your Folks", grafted onto the 23rd Psalm!), Ben Harper ("I Shall Not Walk Alone") and others (Harper guests on three tracks). A few uplifting traditional gospel numbers turn up too. Throughout the programme, Blind Boy Jimmy Carter’s stirring tenor voice is a minor miracle. And "sacred steel" guitarist Robert Randolph and his Family Band are important to the success of the album, supplying an genuine fervour to grooves that complement the elders’ heaven-bound vocals. --Frank-John Hadley

Tell me 5 years ago that I'd get into these guys and I'd have laughed it away. But I tell you....it's infectious; absolutely as good as their Grammy-winning Spirit of the Century from 2001. Songs from Stevie Wonder, Aretha, and trad gospel, done in their own unique way. Very highly recommended.

I am not a religious man (far from it) and am no follower of gospel music but having come across the blid boys of alabamas Spirit of the Century album I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one.
THere is no doubt that this is another fine album full of wonderful vocals. As with Spirit of the century the blind boys have been teamed up with another great set of backing musicians, although I must admit i do miss Danny Thompsons excellent bass playing which was an outstanding feature of the previous album.
There is a good range of songs on this album which show up the beauty of the singing and playing.
Even if like me you would never normall consider a gospel album this is well worth buying and if you have never heard spirit of the century you MUST get that album tha treally is essential listening

and it certainly holds true for this people. They really have gone "back to basics" with their music and therefore the final product is just amazing.
Don't expect any fancy vocals or over-virtuous performances, this is about soul and a simple message, which the blind boys deliver excellently.
