::..Reviewed by Red's Midnight Readers..::

I picked up a free ecopy of this from Amazon. It's the first book in a series of 3, following the characters Ariel and Brayden.
Brayden has been having strange and vivid dreams of a girl and one night this girl walks into the Inn that he is working at. Ariel is shy and doesn't interact with anyone other than Brayden until she accidentally casts a spell on one of the other guests.

Discovering she has fled an agreed marriage, Brayden tells her she is a high witch. One of only three that can exist at the same time as each other. Brayden helps her to control her powers after they find out that Ariel is being hunted by a dark warlock and his wife, who will stop at nothing to capture Ariel and use her for their own needs.

So this book was not my cup of tea. The cover is pretty though, isn't it? I really, really wanted to love it but i just didn't. Like most people i love the idea of the witch story line and felt the author let it down. This book could have been so much more!
It doesn't grab me and keep my attention. I couldn't get into it but luckily it's a fairly short novella, so doesn't require a lot of time to read it.
I felt the writing fell a little flat but it's ok for a free book. I wouldn't recommend it.

I gave it 2 stars.

The premise of this story was a solid fantasy tale. A witch realises her powers are far greater than she imagined, and she must pass a test to avoid becoming a dark witch. The problem I had was that the story was too short for me to believe the strength of feeling between this witch and her romantic interest. They fall in love almost immediately and the interest drops their whole life to go on the run with her. What follows is a very quick climb in magical ability and a number of romps in the sack. I just couldn't take the tale seriously. Maybe next time :)

Could have made a good book if the author could make up her mind about whether she wanted it to be for adults or middle schoolers. Initially, when I began reading book 1 I thought maybe I could get my teenager to read it then the sex scene came in and I thought maybe not. The story and most of the dialogue was simple, seemingly targeted at young readers but then you have these intimate scenes which just seem so out of place. The potential in the storyline is definitely there but the execution and grammar/ language / sentence construction is immature. It read like the over-emotional overdramatic dialogue of movies from the 30s.

I received a copy of High Witch from Story Cartel in exchange for my review.

Brayden has been dreaming about the same girl for the past month, and one day, to his surprise, the same girl seems to turn up at the inn he works at. During dinner she accidentally covers another guest in food using magic, and Brayden comes to realise that she is a High Witch. But Ariel has never been taught about her powers, though with Brayden's help she does start to learn...until it becomes clear that Julius is after her, wanting to turn a good witch bad so that he can carry on living as he has been for centuries.

Though this was a fairly short book, I really enjoyed the world that Hanna created, though quite when that world was I'm not sure, but that doesn't really have much of an impact on the story itself. Primarily this is a romance (well with magic), though it was also fast paced and there was a fair bit of suspense played out.

One of the best things about it was that it actually looked into legends, mainly around the cryptically named test. At the start it wasn't too clear what this was, but as the story progressed you learnt more and more about it, and it was a little gruesome in nature it must be said! But the existence of Julius' test meant that there was more to the plot than two people falling in love.

There was a very small cast of characters, and some of those you could take out and the story would have still worked (but wouldn't have been as good if that makes sense. Those are the characters that flesh it out rather than just having a few). One of the most interesting characters to read about was probably Nadia, especially as her motives for doing anything were so complicated. Despite the fact that she was doing some bad things, I just couldn't think of her as evil.

I really enjoyed this book, and I've now found out there is a second one, which has excited me massively!

Synopsis:

Every night Brayden dreams of a girl he has never met. Then one day she appears at the Inn where Brayden works. He soon learns that the young girl, Ariel is a witch - but not just any witch she is a high witch, resulting in a colossal amount of power. Although one of only three high witches in the world, her family beg her to keep her powers a secret, believing only bad things can result from them. As Ariel begins to learn to control her powers, the two hear of a plot by a warlock named Julius, who bends the power of high witches to his will, in order to preserve his immortal life. So Brayden and Ariel attempt to flee into hiding, in order to stop Julius’s evil plans, but how long can the couple keep running?

Review:

I really wanted to love this book. The plot sounds so interesting, and as I received the box set of the trilogy though LibraryThing, I could not wait to get my teeth sunk into this. I love a good witchy story and the novella does have its good points - I loved the idea of their only being three high witches at a time - as soon as one dies, another is born into the world, regardless if the parents are magical. This was a bit of a twist on the usual generation after generation of witches element that these types of story often have. I thought it was pretty interesting that she keeps her powers a secret, meaning she has so much untapped power and there were so many things she could learn to do and discover about herself.

This however, was where my enjoyment of the book ended.
