First of all, there is a very strong, very clever hard-boiled sense of humour, plenty of laugh out loud moments, with sharp quips and turns of phrase throughout. Then there's Tom Patrick, seemingly a classic man's man action hero, winning at poker, winning with the ladies and with a high pressure jet setting career as an air crash investigator, as you get to know him he is full of self-doubt and self-loathing, reminded me of Adrian Mole at times.
The plot is very tight and builds up gradually, it's a page turner that you don't want to read too fast for fear of missing anything, there is plenty of action, love action.
There are proper gripping, thrills and tension in the last third, with great multiple finales and twists. Lots of novels try to ramp up the action and lose the tension through overblown, overlong, wildly exaggerated action scenes, this doesn't, it manages to accelerate the action while ramping up the tension, making for real non-stop unputdownable thrill ride.
Absolutely superb, I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I loved it!
I hope you are working on book 2 Jack Bowman, I need the fix.
It is quiet a different style to the usual, but as with all the other books, the characters are well drawn and in most cases, engaging.
The subject is interesting and compelling. A good page turner. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
