From the Inside Flap

This is a user-friendly guide to the art and science of management from Andrew S. Grove, the president of America's leading manufacturer of computer chips. Groves recommendations are equally appropriate for sales managers, accountants, consultants, and teachers--anyone whose job entails getting a group of people to produce something of value. Adapting the innovations that have made Intel one of America's most successful corporations, High Output Management teaches you:
what techniques and indicators you can use to make even corporate recruiting as precise and measurable as manufacturing
how to turn your subordinates and coworkers into members of highly productive team
how to motivate that team to attain peak performance every time
Combining conceptual elegance with a practical understanding of the real-life scenarios that managers encounter every day, High Output Management is one of those rare books that have the power to revolutionize the way we work

Most CEOs can tell you about their successes. Some can tell you about their failures. Few can tell you what they do and why they do it. Even fewer can tell you the principles behind what works for them in a way you can understand. Almost none can turn this into something you can use. HIGH OUTPUT MANAGEMENT has met this high standard. Our company recently named INTEL as a Prototype Company of the Future for its outstanding management practices and benefits created for society. The seeds that provided those great results have been available since 1983 when this book was first published. This book is a modern business classic, and you should read it to check for whether or not you are using these methods in your business activities. Dr. Grove wrote this book in a simple way, so you will not have to be an engineer or M.B.A. to understand what he is telling you.

I came upon this book many years ago while an internal consultant for AT&T Bell Laboratories Technical Education. Since then I have found it to be a valuable tool in teaching the basics of management to students inside and outside of corporate structure. I still use it as a member of the faculty of Bloomfield College's Materials Management Institute.
Grove has managed to capture the essence of what a company is all about by using simple examples. No, this isn't a high concept leading edge management text. However, it does communicate the fundamentals of running a manufacturing company clearly and simply. It provides a foundation on which you can build the knowledge of the leading edge theories.

Grove describes his management techniques in a controlled, predictable environment. After reading Tim Jackson's book ("Inside Intel"), I saw the other side of the coin (less rational...). Grove is always coerent and clear. This is a must read, specially for middle-managers, but read Jackson's book for the full story...

The best management book written (from someone who's done an MBA and read his fair share...), straight forward, very practical, not gimmicky, and you should genuinely read all of it - not just the intro and conclusion like 99% of 'mgmt books'.

One of the best business books I've read in a long time. Short book, common sense and to the point. Written by Andrew Grove former CEO of Intel.

I would challenge anyone to review their own workplace, their own work practices using some of Grove's ideas.

Liked the simple idea on the manager's preparation for decision making:

What decision needs to be made?

English: Portrait of Andrew Grove. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

When does it have to be made?
Who will decide?
Who will need to be consulted prior to making the decision?
Who will ratify or veto the dcision
Who will need to be informed of the decision?
Pity it does not happen more often.
On meetings I think he is right: two types. Are we talking of a process oriented meeting (one-on-one, staff meetings, operations reviews) or a mission-oriented meeting?
The discussion of hybrid organisations and dual reporting is straightforward and recognises the reality of how many businesses need to be structured.
Liked the honesty of his section on performance appraisal. And his clarity on the importance of this process, the need for preparation and the rationale for the process in the first instance.
Not sure I fully agreed with him on his views on trying to retain people who say they are going to leave.
Finally - he is very clear on the manager's role and responsibility for training - including preparation and delivery of training. I would see this as a major failing with many managers in industry. And a major missed opportunity.

Although most applicable for improving management of a manufacturing concern, this book is worthwhile reading for anyone trying to run their own business better. I am a partner of a small CPA firm, and found several parts that were useful in running my practice better. I read, re-read, and underlined the chapters on job interviewing and employee reviews. Grove's style has obviously been successful for Intel, and this gives his comments tremendous credibility. I appreciated this, as opposed to the myriad of management books written by authors whose track record is unclear, questionable, or non-existent.

old-fashioned ideas that might have worked in the 1970s but we've all moved on a lot since then. I particularly objected to his idea that in handling under-performing staff the only options you have are motivation and training. I would say this is not wrong, but it isn't helpful either. And what about "vision" in management? A lot of current problems are caused by blinkered attitudes and sheep-like behaviour. Grove has nothing to say on the topic.
But a good book nevertheless.
