From the Back Cover
HEALTH The High Blood Pressure Solution presents a natural approach to controlling hypertension and dispels many of the myths surrounding the treatment of this silent killer. In clear, simple language, backed by sound scientific research, Dr. Moore explains how: - Hypertension is completely preventable without reliance on synthetic drugs - Artificially lowering blood pressure to "normal" levels with drugs fails to prevent many strokes and heart attacks - The vast majority of strokes could be eliminated by balancing dietary potassium and sodium - Based on the principles in this book, the entire country of Finland has reduced strokes and heart attacks 60% nationwide Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition of The High Blood Pressure Solution with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where table salt has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium/magnesium mixture. Between 1972 and 1992, Finland saw a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. He also includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that reduction of any hypertension drugs you might be taking can be effected safely. RICHARD MOORE holds an M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. in biophysics from Purdue University. He has been a professor of biophysics at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a visiting professor at the University of Vermont's medical school. He has been active in the field of biomedical research for over thirty years.See all Product Description

What you should know:
Lowering salt/sodium intake alone is of no use at all unless you can actually decrease the ratio of sodium to potassium that you eat.
High blood pressure is just one of the more visible symptoms caused by not getting enough potassium compared to sodium. If you eat too much salt then you can still be at high risk of heart disease and stroke even without having high blood pressure.
Blood pressure medicine can lower your blood pressure without significantly lowering your risk of heart disease and stroke (and in some cases increase the rates of mortality).
If you change your diet to get more potassium and less sodium, you can lower your blood pressure but more importantly avoid other problems such as insulin resistance/diabetes etc.
The published recommended daily amounts for salt are much too high and you should aim for much less.
I don't have high blood pressure and I read this book because I have family that do. I have now made changes to my diet and am recommeding the same to other healthy friends. Much better to do it before you have a problem as some of the effects of salt are irreversible if unchecked for too long (like hardening of arteries).
I am 31 year old with family strong history of blood pressure and diabetes. My father had a stroke at young age of 47 which he survived but untimately had another after 11 years which he could not survive. I was diaganosed stage 3 hypertension just recently which alarmed me because of my family history. I was asked by GP to modify my life style (quit smoking, eat healthy, exercise etc.). I have been exercising quiet regularly (at least 3 to 4 times a week cardiovascular exercise of moderat intensity - means more than 30 minutes) since years but had hardly any idea what healthy eating means, how much salt intake is recommended etc. My GP was surprised why I am getting such high blood pressure at young age as I am not overweight and exercise quiet regularly. I went through lots of tests which were OK but still my blood pressue was high even after quitting smoking and regular exercise. I was referred to Consultant who finally decided to put me on medication. In the mean while, I got hold of this marvellous book and discussed with my consultant whether it is safe to take high potassium diet (diet with high ratio of K/NA - Potassium / Sodium) as recommended in the book. My consultant was happy for me to take up the advise mentioned in the book. You will be surprised how this book transformed my life in just over a month. I used to have on average 190/115 blood pressure before starting medication and this book advise. Just after two weeks of taking this book advise and medication, my blood pressure was 110/70.Read more ›
My heartfelt thanks to all the people who reviwed this book on amazon UK and the US site, your reviews gave me hope, and Dr. Moore you sorted my problem, thank you!
The book has also made us think about how easily we turn to Pharmaceutical drugs whenever anything is wrong instead of trying to deal with the underlying causes of our ailments. We've not become anti-medicine overnight but we will consider other options in future. At the same time that we bought this book, we also bought a blood pressure monitor and now check our blood presure at home.
