The synopsis at the back of the book does not prepare you for the fright you will feel when you read this book. Koontz does not specialize in gore, choosing instead to bring to the fore of our minds our hidden fears or insinuate fears we did not know we could conceive. He is a genius at psychological manipulations and you will know visceral fear. The plot is a great one and moves at a galloping pace. This book's basic premise seems simple enough, but its implications are spellbinding, heartbreaking and truly fearsome. As usual, the characters are ones you can relate to, and feel compassion for, even pray for. The compulsion to peek at the end before you reach it will at times be overwhelming, just to set your mind at ease, but you'll be glad you built up to the climax. First rate!

i really enjoyed this book as i do with most of Dean Koontz stories, it was kept at a pace which i enjoy. It was one of those "don't talk to me I'm reading" books which my children hate me reading because i don't pay them any attention!!!

This was a finely written novel...scary and gripping-a real page-turner.

A stylish, dark and totally enthralling thriller which crackles with energy, menace and surprises.

Awesome!

Wow! I was very pleased to read that a good intruder alarm and solid locks are a good barrier against a demon. I thought I was going to have a heart attack part way through this book, my pulse racing and my heart thumping as the anti-hero crept around the victims' house. Dean Koontz has a reputation for the dark side of literature but the plot of this book was so compelling that it broke through the language barrier of the german version that I was reading. I found myself wandering around the basement and trying to see in the dark like our man Vassago. Hatch is a brick and Regina an absolute gem. The ending transports you finally into another dimension. Hideaway has brought me back into the Dean Koontz fanclub.

Scary Stuff

If you love horror, you'll love this one. From a traffic accident to recovery to sheer terror. This book is totally different from anything I've read or seen. The Koontz imagination does it again!

Also recommended: From the Corner of His Eye, Instensity, Cold Fire, Strange Highways, The Mask, Door To December, Sole Survivor, Fear Nothing, The Voice of the Night, Watchers, Seize the Night.

This book quite simply to put it is very 'Dean Koontz', there was nothing special in this book that particularly grabbed me I felt as I had heard it all in his previous work and this was just a collaboration of the themes and issues he deals with.
Still as a Dean Koontz fan I did enjoy reading this, but I was looking for something more original.
If you are new to Koontz try 'Lighting' or 'The Watchers'

This was my very first Dean Koontz novel which I picked up in a charity shop for only 30 pence.
The book rolls along at a right old pace and certainly keeps the reader involved, but it's the way Dean Koontz tells a story that is the most impressive (other writers take note here please),he really does crank the tension slowly and keeps the reader engaged right up until the last page.
Character development is first class.......I could quite clearly envisage all of these people in my mind, which can't be said of other novels I have read recently.
The book can be grisly and menacing at times, but that didn't detract from the overall tale which i'm sure other readers will enjoy.
It won't be my last DK book and the real question I ask myself is........which one do I choose next, but whatever I read I know that i'm going to enjoy it.

I love the psychological aspects of Dean Koontz's stories and this was no exception. Wonderful and realistic characters sit well within the plot with the style and flow of the writing bringing everything alive in this fast paced thriller.

I especially loved Regina and would like to hear more from her.

A fantastic read about life, death and what could be.

Recommended.
