Product Description

Product Description

On the windswept Suffolk mudflats creaks a bird-hide, inside which hovers Roy Tunt, a prematurely aged, mildly obsessive-compulsive birder. With one more sighting - the elusive sociable ploves - he will have 'twitched' the entire British list. Tunt has his shortwave radio, packed-lunch and a portrait of his ex-wife Sandra for company. Suddenly the hide door blows open and a bedraggled stranger enters; a fugitive from the storm. After a tense introduction, the two men discover that they share a good deal in common. As the two men begin to form a close bond news of a police manhunt sets them both on edge driving their fragile relationship to a tragic conclusion.

I almost didn't watch this film. The premise of two men in a hut and a theme that revolves around birdwatching didn't fill me with high hopes. To say I was surprised, then, is an understatement. This is genuinely one of the best films I've ever seen. The pacing is close to perfection, keeping my interest until the very last frame, and the dark - and sometimes darkly comic - atmosphere is very cleverly cultivated, expertly building menace and tension throughout. Phil Cambell gives a great performance as the uninvited guest but the spotlight is taken by Alex MacQueen, whose character Roy Tunt is depicted with incredible authenticity. MacQueen's acting is simply flawless.

This film won't appeal to everyone. There are no gunfights or explosions, no showboating or wisecracking. But if you want a solid plot with a nice twist, superb acting and captivating mood then this is for you.

A film version of a play set inside a bird hide on the Suffolk mudflats with only two characters, an oddball middle aged ornithologist and a mysterious tattooed interloper.
The conversations and interactions between the two of them are riveting and wholly plausible whilst the power dynamics between the two characters shift subtly and continuously throughout. Very macabre and funny with some classic lines of dialogue delivered superbly by the two accomplished character actors cast here. The pacing is expertly handled and the mild curiosity one initially feels steadily develops into full blown intrigue, matched by the two characters on-screen interest and mis-trust in each other.
Another quite nice thing about 'The Hide' is how quintessentially English it is from the oppressive overcast weather conditions of the mudflats, the eccentricness of the bird watcher in particular to the nature of the horrifying events that underpin the whole story.
With films such as 'The Hide' the less said to someone who hasn't seen it the better as the real pay-off is having watched their relatonship develop and evolve towards its grimy conclusion so I will just end by heartly recommending this as an excellent example of a top transference from stage to screen, brilliant character acting and a well written and directed story.

There aren't many films I have seen which are so simple and at the same time so complex and well written. Throughout we get a good insight into the character's lives and we delve deeper and deeper into the situations which surround them. At the same time short mysterious clips re occur clouding parts of the storyline in mystery, provoking thoughts as we try to figure out what the two character's are hiding away from the audience and from each other. Towards the end everything is revealed in a flurry of well timed explanations and twists leading to quite a satisfying and truly unpredicatable conclusion.

A near-perfect film: superb acting - the dynamics between the two men are riveting - and just the right length to keep it taut. It reminded me a little of a Tennessee Williams drama ('Suddenly Last Summer' comes to mind) in that it all takes place in one intensely focused setting while incorporating a story from another place, another time, until,in the denouement, both stories collide. To those who like their films action-packed from the starting-line, I would say 'wait and see'. This film is all the more effective by beginning as though it's about nothing more thrilling than the developing relationship between two diverse characters - though if you watch it a second time (as I intend to) you will spot the clues. By turn, disquieting, funny, sensitive, disgusting, macabre. These are real men in an unreal situation.

Bit of a slow burner this and shows its stage origins but well worth watching and worth rewatching. A twitcher in his hide is about to complete his sightings of all the British birds. He is interrupted by an unexpected visitor, but who is hiding what from the other and himself?

The first fifteen or twenty minutes of this were quite hard going - I bore with it mostly because the reviews were so good. (You will need to concentrate on it to get the most out of it; it's not one for wandering in and out of the room while doing several other things.) But it came good in the end!

Watched this based on the glowing reviews. To be honest at about the 45 minute mark I was thinking that it was decent but not completely worthy of all the praise. I can't remember ever changing my mind so completely in such a short space of time about a film. I don't want to spoil it by saying too much, except persevere and you'll want to watch it again straight away. Fantastically written, acted and filmed.

I just watched this movie which has been lurking on my dvd/hd recorder since March 2011, a month or more and it has left an indelible impression in my memory bank of great movies. Actualy the previous amazon reviewers have pretty much said it all for me particulary the first review.Likewise I was initialy dissuaded from watching this unforgetably brilliant movie by the notion of just two men in a cabin and one being a bird watcher, but I am so pleased I did. This modest little movie proves the point that the best drama comes from well engineered and delivered dialogue.

This movie which was based upon a play rightfully has been compared to the bleak beautiful works of the great Samuel Beckett. You can also see the Losey legacy for great dialogue based movies such "The Servant" and "King and Country" I hope we will see more movies of this type from the director of this masterpiece Marek Losey, grandson of Joseph Losey. Films such as this will live much longer in the memory than any amount of big budget blockbuster action movies. This is one of those movies I shall enjoy watching many times over. I hope he does more movies with these two brilliant actors as well.

Kind Regards
