On the windswept Suffolk mudflats creaks a bird-hide, inside which hovers Roy Tunt, a prematurely aged, mildly obsessive-compulsive birder. With one more sighting - the elusive sociable ploves - he will have 'twitched' the entire British list. Tunt has his shortwave radio, packed-lunch and a portrait of his ex-wife Sandra for company. Suddenly the hide door blows open and a bedraggled stranger enters; a fugitive from the storm. After a tense introduction, the two men discover that they share a good deal in common. As the two men begin to form a close bond news of a police manhunt sets them both on edge driving their fragile relationship to a tragic conclusion.

This film won't appeal to everyone. There are no gunfights or explosions, no showboating or wisecracking. But if you want a solid plot with a nice twist, superb acting and captivating mood then this is for you.
The conversations and interactions between the two of them are riveting and wholly plausible whilst the power dynamics between the two characters shift subtly and continuously throughout. Very macabre and funny with some classic lines of dialogue delivered superbly by the two accomplished character actors cast here. The pacing is expertly handled and the mild curiosity one initially feels steadily develops into full blown intrigue, matched by the two characters on-screen interest and mis-trust in each other.
Another quite nice thing about 'The Hide' is how quintessentially English it is from the oppressive overcast weather conditions of the mudflats, the eccentricness of the bird watcher in particular to the nature of the horrifying events that underpin the whole story.
With films such as 'The Hide' the less said to someone who hasn't seen it the better as the real pay-off is having watched their relatonship develop and evolve towards its grimy conclusion so I will just end by heartly recommending this as an excellent example of a top transference from stage to screen, brilliant character acting and a well written and directed story.
This movie which was based upon a play rightfully has been compared to the bleak beautiful works of the great Samuel Beckett. You can also see the Losey legacy for great dialogue based movies such "The Servant" and "King and Country" I hope we will see more movies of this type from the director of this masterpiece Marek Losey, grandson of Joseph Losey. Films such as this will live much longer in the memory than any amount of big budget blockbuster action movies. This is one of those movies I shall enjoy watching many times over. I hope he does more movies with these two brilliant actors as well.

A really enjoyable little film. Who would have thought a film about birdwatching with just two characters in a shed could be gripping and exciting but it is. Read morePublished on 31 Mar. 2011 by Will
I love this film. The acting is wonderful, great script, tension builds slowly and creates an ominous atmosphere. It is witty and clever -definately worth watching.Published on 10 Jan. 2011 by Spangles
