This was a very interesting exploitation/horror gore film from Chile, I wouldn't exactly recommend this film for those who have a weak stomach as it was quite disturbing. South American horror has been hitting the headlines with increasing frequency of late, with the likes of the Uruguayan “Silent House” having received international releases, not to mention Hollywood remakes. The Chilean “Hidden in the Woods”, directed by Patricio Valladares, is a very different proposition indeed, being a full-blown, utterly amoral exploitation gore thriller that is likely to offend and dismay viewers of all tastes.

Apparently based on a true story, the film charts the fortunes of Ana and Anny (Siboney Lo and Carolina Escobar), two young sisters raised in the forest by their abusive drug dealer father (Daniel Antivilo), who regularly beats and sexually assaults them. When he is arrested after killing a couple of investigating police with a chainsaw, the sisters are forced to fend for themselves, taking care of Anny’s handicapped, animalistic son, who has spent most of his life locked in the shed. When drug lord Costello hears about the drug dealer's arrest he sends some men looking for his missing drugs, and basically all hell breaks loose. the film does deliver as an all-out grindhouse experience. Whilst it does pack in a lot of rape, sexual abuse, cannibalism and violence, the film never glorifies anything and the camera certainly seems to treat the mistreatment of its male and female characters with equally gleeful abandon.

Two girls are raised by their drug-dealing father out in the Chilean countryside after he brutally murders their mother. Soon as the girls come of age the father begins raping them and the elder sister gives birth to a deformed child as a result who is raised in a shed on raw meat. Eventually the police head out to the fathers property and he ends up killing them with a chainsaw. The girls use the carnage as a pretext to escape into the woods with their brother/son where they live in a remote cabin off the proceeds of the elder sisters new career as a roadside prostitute. Life is quiet aside from one brief interruption from a pair of sleazeball back-packers who attempt to rape the younger sister only to get cannibalised by her and her brother/nephew. Eventually however, dads boss discovers that he may have made off with his drugs before getting locked up and sends some brutal thugs off into the woods to hunt the sisters down.
If that all sounds pretty sick and twisted then..well it is a pretty sick and twisted little film. Certainly its not for all tastes and at least half the people reading may want to remove four stars from my review as a result. Its a film that skirts the lines of what is acceptable in a film constantly and some may argue crosses that line on more than one occasion. That said if your after a slice of nasty, sleazy unrepentant exploitation then this is a film you should really check out. It's not as graphic as one might expect and a lot of its shocks work on a level where you think its worse than it is because of the films savage tone and its queasy yellow tinted cinematography. The disc does not appear to be region locked, comes with a few bonus features and an inlay with some liner notes. You may end up selling it back on here after viewing but its worth a go for fans of gritty exploitation.

Well didn't know too much about this film to start off with but thought I'd take a chance and it was well worth it. I was very surprised about this movie, it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, never dull and runs at a very decent pace, very well made. I would definitely recommend this to any horror fan who likes extreme movies.
