About the Author

Inspired by dreams, Melinda Powell co-founded the Dream Research Institute, at the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education, London, to promote research into the relationship between dreams and wellbeing. Melinda has served as past vice-president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and as director of Help Counselling Centre. She works as a psychotherapist and teaches the art of Lucid Dreaming. Melinda has published and lectured widely on dreams and lucidity. Born in Southern California, she lived for a number of years in Poland and Switzerland before making her home in the United Kingdom.

It is hard to describe how captured I was by The Hidden Lives of Dream and how impressed I was by the author’s incredible range of knowledge and her courage in being so honest and revealing about herself. It is such an unexpected book too, the approach she has chosen is so extraordinarily unique and so important for our welfare and the welfare of the world, a fascinating, moving and powerful read.

Melinda Powell has written a magical book. She has woven the personal and the theoretical into a beautiful whole.
I learned so much of both the science and art of dreaming, which I have been able to apply to my own dreams.

I shall treasure this wonderful book for leading me back to the world of my dreams with knowledge that I didn’t have when I used to record them many years ago. I am already remembering them more clearly and am learning to trust their guidance.

In the book, Melinda says, “When two souls touch, something new comes into being in the space between them …”. In sharing openly of her own dreams and life, she has offered the reader just that. It’s a rare gift.

Powerful, prophetic and timely

Melinda Powell has provided us with a real gem. The book is beautifully written, accessible yet rooted in a solid research (drawing from science, psychotherapy, philosophy, religious studies, art and psychology) and her own experience. It is this latter that makes the book gripping. The author is utterly generous in sharing with the reader her own dreams and how over the years she came to view and draw from them. She makes a powerful case for the importance of dreams in coming to terms with one’s past, present and future. She shows how dreams can help us to overcome fear, rigidity and anything that blocks us from living a fulfilled, compassionate and balanced life. Reading this book (at the time of Covid-19 pandemic) gave me a lot of comfort and insight. It helped me to understand that darkness is a form of light, that the unknowness doesn’t need to be scary, that dreams (even nightmares) can help us to be genuinely present to ourselves and the world around us. I highly recommend it: the book is a dream.

Wake up to a world of dreams

This is a wise and moving book that I was given as a gift. It is written in a readable yet well-researched style. Powell brings together the threads of personal, psychological and spiritual perspectives and global concerns and shows how paying attention to our dreams can weave them together to create deep meaning. Drawing on her work as a psychotherapist and researcher as well as her personal experience she shows not only how the wisdom of dreams illuminates our personal and collective problems, she offers guidance on how to pay attention to, learn from, and welcome the transformative power of our dreams. This book is required reading for anyone who has ever awakened curious, moved or awed by a dream.

I read this book as soon as it arrived - it jumped the queue of all the others I wanted to read - It is a luminous book, very inspirational and a good blend of transpersonal and scientific which is rare to find. Melinda Powell shows research, a vast reservoir of well digested knowledge and that precious ingredient: first hand experience of what she is talking about. The book is also easy to read, really good to get people interested and more understanding of what dreams are and of how much they can enhance our life. I am a psychotherapist and I have already recommended it to three clients with whom I do dreamwork. It is a gem indeed.
