5.0 out of 5 stars Take me back to France! 20 May 2010

"Hidden France" is a handsome book, wonderfully written, and a real keepsake of our recent memorable trip to France. I've never seen a more beautifully photographed book, nor one that is more charmingly written. It is well done in every respect. It should be in the hands of every lover of stone houses and barns, tall churches, vineyards, mountains, green vistas, and the most irresistable villages imaginable. A treasure. Great thanks to Amazon for making it affordably available.
5.0 out of 5 stars The best! 28 July 2012

I own a number of picture books about French country villages but this one is definitely the best. The text is filled with information that will be used in planning future trips. The voice of Brigitte Tilleray (the author) is interesting and relaxed, as if she's telling you about her latest vacation. Her choice of places to include is spot on. I am grateful for her work (and envious of the time she spent exploring France).

The photographer, Richard Turpin, has captured the beauty of France with style and authenticity. I look at these photos and ask, "why didn't I think of that angle?" or "next time I'll remember to go to the edge of the village." I'll hope to find more of his work.

This book (the UK version) was published in 1999 and I'm just reading it in 2012. In the interim the digital camera and digital printing have totally changed the creation and publishing of photography, making photos sharper and brighter. I found that the photos in this book, which I'm assuming were originally on film and published in the old color-separation way, have a gentle quality about them that makes them perhaps more beautiful than new pictures.

I recommend to everyone who loves France that they find a copy of this book. It's very fine.
