When I first put these on I thought "uh oh" these are not comfortable at all but after wearing them for a few days they are very comfortable and snug. Theres no need to wear walking socks. I have been through some wet areas and remained dry so they are waterproofed very well. Very happy with the quality of these and hope they last a long time like my previous pair.
I guess if you paid a lot more money you could get a lot more boot - Depends what you are looking for but I can confirm that over the few months and numerous outings I have had with them they are comfortable and keep me dry.I would recommend them.
Rather than express an opinion, let me instead quantify their use then you can make your own decision as to whether they are a wise purchase for you.
These boots have walked approximately 5000 steps (half the recommended daily amount) over flat paved surfaces over approximately 50 days since purchased (purchased approximately 4 months ago). After about 35 days I noticed two rips in the side of each boot. I sewed the holes and reinforced this with a flexible waterproof glue to seal it up (the shiny stuff in the pictures). After a further 15 days worth of walking I completed my journey to discover a new 4" rip on a previously unaffected side. I deemed this to be beyond repair and have binned the boots.
To be clear, this is the material the shoe is made of that has failed, not the stitching giving way.
They have been used for nothing other than walking, total use is of the order of 150 miles. To reinforce how little these boots have been stressed, the soles and heals showed very little sign of wear, this being the usual manner of my boots demise.
I've worn these 4 or 5 times now. I'm a size 8 normally and bought a size 8 in this boot and they were a perfect fit. I generally wear 2 pairs of socks with them, a trainer or thin sock with a thermal or walking sock over the top and there are no issues with size.
Every time I've worn these they have kept my feet warm and dry all day long with no issues no matter how heavy the rain or cold the ground underfoot. These boots are extremely comfortable to wear and walk in and although they are quite chunky I've taken to wearing them at a weekend with my jeans for pottering about in too as they are pretty smart looking.
I haven't tested them to the extremes yet with a full off-road wet grass and mud trekking experience (as i don't want to get the dirty sadly) so cant vouch for their capabilities as a full-on hiking boot. However they have a chunky vibram rubber sole with great grip and while being quite lightweight they look and feel well built and heavy duty, so my gut feeling is that they will perform well.
I did quite a lot of research before plumping for these and although the boots generally got good reviews I was initially quite skeptical due to;
a) The brand - back in the 80's Hi-Tec weren't necessarily know for quality hiking boots; and
b) The price - they were pretty much towards the lower end of what you could pay for a walking boot when compared to the likes of Berghaus, Merrel etc.
I'm a believer in you get what you pay for, but for the relatively low price (comparatively speaking) and for my requirements I am more than happy with my purchase and would recommend these boots.
