Hewligan: The last sane man in the asylum. The fate of the planet Earth rests on his scalp. Hirsute hero Hewligan is pronounced sane after a spell in the Five Seasons (?) Mental Hospital because he hears voices and sees wierd things. Enjoying "Care in the Community" the comic strip goes into vibrant colour as Hewligan pounds the city streets hallucinating wildly. Somehow he breaks a law and is pursued - he gets away through a wall and escaping on (OK carrying) a rocking horse called Dada with a young lady called Scarlet O'Gasmeter.
Scarlet explains that there are lots of different dimensions, each one tuned into a kind of frequency like radio stations along a dial. This is why some people are clumsy as they are out of tune and this is why things (like socks) disappear. UFOs are obviously alien footwear that have drifted out of tune with their dimension and slipped into ours.
Still on the run they go through a Cubist Wavelength from an art dimension and into a repeating Warhol Wavelength. On and on they run through different dimensions: a West End musical,
THE PRISONER (1967) - The Complete Collection , Stevenage - until they get a double decker bus to Easter Island.
The giant heads of Easter Island have the solution to the puzzle of why Hewligan is so way out of tune.
Included in my edition is a lurid Judge Dredd story - Spok's Mock Chocs and a few posters.
If you like Tank Girl and the Gorillas you might like this.
So, as you may have gathered, this story is very silly indeed. But, it made me feel youngish and slightly hopeful and a little inspired. The writing and the art are perfectly matched in a Pythonesque art school car crash of cultural craziness.

I was overjoyed to find this book on Amazon after one of those long rambling pub conversations about comics you remember from your childhood - as an avid reader of 2000AD as it made what is now seen as the massive leap from kids sci-fi to incubator of many of the most famous names in todays comics, I vividly remembered this short series as the point I realised that comics could be more than BIFF ZAP POW.

Reading it again I realise just how great it was - it's pointless to try and give a precis of the plot because it's demented, surreal genius through and through. It all made a sort of sense at the time though...

I'd like to knock off a point for being charged a tenner for a book that's only 64 pages long but I just love it too much. Buy it.

This is a great little story. Pretty funny and a great sample of it's era. Jamie Hewletts artwork is great, not as tight as his Tank Girl artwork but nice and simple. Still looking great after all these years.
Having said that you would have to be an idiot to pay the extortionate prices the second hand market is asking. Until there's a reprint you would be better off finding the original 8 part series in back issues of 2000AD, progs 700 - 707

This is without a doubt the finest love story ever told. Amazing graphics and a story that drags you in kicking and screaming. If you haven't already read it you are missing out. The plight of Hewligan dealing with an ever changing world that makes little or no sense is one we can all relate to. Yet through the uncertainty rides Scarlet and together they can do anything.

Going through a 2000ad phase as I remember my formative years. This is as good I remember it. Great story telling and art work. Genius

This is the book that will let you know where that lost sock went. Great comic if you're a fan of Tank Girl, or similar silly comics.
