Bargain, bargain, bargain. Worth £400 easily, just make sure you do some reading online first, bookmark some pages and how-to guides as it's pretty light on the instructions (unsurprising as it's Enterprise) - and don't worry too much about using the Intelligent Provisioning, except for making sure your RAID arrays are correctly and optimally set up. The all important RAID Controller driver (again, arguable whether you want to use this fake-RAID array - I'm happy with it but I did upgrade the box to an i5 and 16GB RAM which alleviates the CPU overhead of the RAID controller) was historically a bit of a pain to source, but I believe is now independently available for pretty much all platforms (certainly Windows, CentOS, Red Hat and ESXi, and I've seen repositories for Ubuntu/Debian).

I bought this to upgrade my N40L. I paid £170 for this with £55 cashback also throw in the £60 I got for selling the N40L, makes a total cost of £65 for this device. I'll be in heaven before I ever get to buy something of this standard for this price....although that's exactly what I said about the N40L!

My recommendation is by the Celeron option and then see if you need a CPU upgrade, if you do there are better options than the standard alternative offered by HP.

Perfect OpenMediaVault NAS or Ubuntu Media PC

If you want to save power, especially in standby, then turn off iLo support, this is basically an android computer running to handle remote diagnostics. It uses a few watts all the time even in standby.

Pros

Boots from USB keys, and internal MicroSD
No alternative at this price point, you couldn't build your own mini itx machine with 4 caddy drive bays for the price.
ECC memory - great for peace of mind to build a very reliable NAS eg Open Media Vault (OMV) or FreeNAS
All hardware recognised perfectly with Ubuntu 16.04

Cons

Will not boot from USB CDROM / DVD at all!....also means IODD usb DVD emulator doesn't boot.
In AHCI mode you can not boot of the ODD / motherboard sata connection, this connection is also slowed down as it is designed for dvd drive only. In an ideal setup you would want you OS / Boot drive on here, probably even an SSD, so not really possible.
There will probably be hacker bios that fixes this like on the Gen7.
Hard to do anything the standard PC way, eg Bios updates, drivers.
Hard to get drivers for standard windows versions, as only available for windows server editions.
(You can extract them from the update ISO using 7zip)
No side vent in case where PCI-E slot is, not good if you are adding a graphics card to use as a HTPC / Kodi box.
iLo needs an annual licence to be fully usable - what a con!...

Excellent micro server for home or small-office use

Great little server, especially for the £168 I paid for it. It's a well-built, solid, professional piece of kit, but still nicely compact and good looking. Pity this server does not support UEFI, only PC BIOS, but it's still an excellent choice if you want to set up a server or NAS for a home or a small office. I have installed four 3TB Western Digital RED HDDs in it and software RAIDed them (two pairs of RAID1 arrays for my purposes), with /boot on a microSD card in the internal card slot.

The HP B120i RAID controller requires a driver and is thus really 'fake RAID'. If you're a Linux user, a driver is only available for Red Hat and SUSE Enterprise. There used to be a driver for earlier versions of Ubuntu, but that was discontinued several years ago, so if you want to use Ubuntu on this server you will have to use software RAID (mdadm) and you will have to disable the B120i and enable SATA AHCI support in the BIOS (Press F9 at boot to open the BIOS menu and: a) Change "System Options/SATA Controller Options" to "Enable SATA AHCI Support"; b) In "PCI Device Enable/Disable" make sure "HPSmart Array Controller" is disabled).

One downside is that you cannot hot-plug HDDs; you must shut down the server if you want to add/remove HDDs.

Posts several years ago in various Web forums (especially the HP Enterprise Community forum) complained about the noisy fan in this model, but the BIOS has been fixed since then and the fan is nice and quiet in mine. It's a whacking great fan, too, which inspires confidence in the server's ability to keep the internals sufficiently cool.

The server has two memory card slots, and came with one 4GB RAM card. I replaced that with two 8GB RAM cards, and the server is now running Ubuntu Server 14.04.4 happily with 16GB RAM. As the four HDDs I installed are bigger than 2TB, I am using them with a GPT rather than a MBR. The slot at the top is just a blanking plate, but you could also fit an optical drive or an SSD drive in the top. There are plenty of YouTube videos about this model, so you can study them to see some of the options and how to fit them.

The five USB 2 ports (two front, two rear, one internal), two USB 3 ports (rear), one internal microSD slot, and two Ethernet ports, should be more than enough for most users.

It's a breeze to open the hinged front panel to insert HDDs, and the panel can even be locked internally if you remove the server casing (which is also a breeze to remove).

The integrated graphics hardware is nothing to write home about, but this is a server, after all, and intended to be run headless. I can run X Windows on it, but dragging a window is painful. I normally use it headless, of course.

Anyway, if you're looking for a headless server or NAS for home or small-office use, this is a good buy. If you specifically want a machine with UEFI support, look elsewhere, though.

If your reading this, then I`m pretty sure you allready understand what you looking at.

For the record, its a bit smaller than I imagined. Its very easy to upgrade, case comes off without using tools.

Motherboard is easy to remove if you changing the CPU.

Sat in my office, which is warm, it makes no noise. Can happily stream HD video while doing some file copying etc and the fan rarely reaches 20% - much much quieter than my Sandisk NAS.

Bought an iLO Advanced license for £20 on a popular auction website!
