5.0 out of 5 stars Scraping away the layers of a New York jewel. 18 Dec. 2015

Palimpsest is the process of removing and scraping layers from an old document and creating new text. That word is used throughout this sumptuous book on the restoration of the Park Avenue Armory in New York. This has always been a favorite building of mine for their untouched aesthetic rooms. Nowhere else in the world is there such a wealth of rooms from this period. Herzog and De Meuron are in the process of scraping away years of neglect and bringing back the splendor of the era. This is not some super modern update nor is it a perfect period recreation, this team has scraped away the layers to reveal the history and the ghosts of this building. Highly detailed period and contemporary photographs detail every room in the armory and how the restoration will be performed. Rooms from Tiffany & co, Herter Bros., Pottier & Stymus, etc… are each given a chapter and described in detail. It is an amazing document of a hidden gem in New York and one of the best design books of the year.
