Four friends are forced into running to Tibet when they are entrusted with the safe delivery of The Golden Sutra to a friendly temple there. The bad guys, led by Eagle Han Ying, are hot on their heels though, setting up road blocks made from human kung fu cannon fodder along the way.. Hoping to intercept our heroes before they get to their destination.
So with the dastardly plot well under way, and the traitorous evil monk (not to mention his horde of troops) pursuing our travelling heroes, they will have to use every skill they know if they are to survive...

This is great, I'd never seen this before but it turned out to be a light hearted fight extravaganza, with some very exciting displays of fisticuffs and athleticism. The choreography comes by way of two of the cast (Robert Tai and Lo Rei) and there's not a dull moment in this very fast paced beat~em~up.
Typically some of the corny humour falls way short of the mark and it's gloriously retarded at times, but that doesn't stop this being a whole load of fun.

I watched this with a friend (who likes the genre but is by no means a connoisseur) and he really enjoyed it. At one point during the film I suggested that all it needed now was some evil wizard or crazy monster for the good guys to fight, in order to complete it's madcap balance.. Then a troupe of weirdo swordsmen turned up with swirly, faceless masks and coloured wigs... Followed by some spooky, crazy dudes who came flying out of coffins, trying to kill the goodies, and I was very happy..
..Well you know what they say about small things pleasing small minds!

The Terracotta dvd which uses the title Hero of Shaolin (although some may know this as Ninja Vs Shaolin Guards) is absolutely first rate! It's wide, dubbed (funny dubbing too, which helps the goofy bits) and practically blu ray standard. In fact I've seen worse blu rays than this...
A great release, that comes recommended.

Four Shaolin brothers live peacefully in their monastery. However when one of their teachers betray the school killing the Shaolin Abbot in a attempt to steal the Golden Sutra. However before the Abbot dies he is able to give the Sutra to the four brothers so they can get it safely to Tibet.

During the 1980's it was mainly Golden Harvest who where the main production company releasing Kung Fu flicks. With stars such as Jackie Chan (The Young Master and Dragon Lord) and Sammo Hung (The Prodigal Son) mainly dominating the box office it left actors such as Alexander Lo Rei in their shadows although it doesn't mean he was any less talented than them when it came to Martial Arts.

During the early 1980's Ninja films such as Enter the Ninja, Five Element Ninjas and Revenge of the Ninja became very popular so this was released under the title Ninja Vs the Shaolin Guard although the Ninjas have a very limited amount of screen time.

Alexander Lo Rei is great as First brother who was refused to be allowed to join his fellow brothers as a Shaolin Monk. Hence why he is the only one of the three to not have his head shaved. His fighting skills are great and along with Eagle Han Ying (from 36th Chamber of Shaolin) who plays the traitor who betrays the Shaolin Temple. The rest of the cast are okay and show off a variety of Kung Fu skills but cant match up to these two.

As to be expected with this movies is the slapstick comedy. The cousin of First brother is there solely for comical relief. He pulls stupid faces and is mainly accompanied by some silly music. In one very annoying scene he takes on a group of zombies who are dressed like clowns.

The action scenes for the most part are impressive.

Kick me in my as@! This movie with it's amazing choreography is crazy sick. Though, it still doesn't compare, in my opinion, to: "Shaolin Temple Against Lama", but my gosh, it's up there! Not to be missed by any martial arts movie fanatic, like me.

Great film - Alexander Lo Rei, Eagle Han Ying, Mike Wong, and Robert Tai are all on excellent shape-shifting form and given ample opportunity to show off their skills. The humour and story are very well done, priceless lines and images mix a sense of fun with the building tension. The Korean countryside has never looked better, with the action set among pine forests, lakes, and historic landmarks such as Hwaseong Fortress and the walls of Suwon.

Unheard of to see such an obscure classic in this quality - well worth seeking out!
