Product description

Review

Once again, Furst succeeds in turning human history into tense, humane - and in parts surprisingly sexy - drama (MAIL ON SUNDAY)

a more more-ish read than the vast majority of more meaty, formula-driven thrillers (SUNDAY TIMES)

When the theme is espionage during the dark days of wartime Europe, Alan Furst is one of its elite novelists. (THE TIMES)

Eloquently told, with Furst's customary mastery of both atmosphere and character - not to mention his delicate touch with tension - it is confirmation he is a writer without peer in the recreation of wartime espionage. (DAILY MAIL)

More tales of derring-do against the Nazis from the excellent Furst (THE SUN)

Book Description

Let Alan Furst take you on a journey through the cobbled streets and smoky salons of wartime Europe as the continent stands on the brink...

Oh my, what an excellent plot. We know the basic idea of the Resistance in France, but this takes us deep into the plotting, the organisation and the rivalries. Maybe some things did seem a little too fortuitous, but it was a book that held me and kept me entertained.

A great read as always, however Mr.Furst's books are all of a type, the names change but the stories all follow a similar theme, gets a bit predictable after you've read a few, Saying that, I've read them all and I suppose I'll read the next one too.

The one bad thing about reading the latest Furst novel is the knowledge you're going to have to wait so long for the next one. This is a pure treat. He has a way of summing up the atmosphere in one sentence - I could almost feel the danger in that train carriage. Suspense, realism - god, how did they live and get through those days. I just wish he could read twice as fast.

Just finished this wonderful book. Alan Furst is a superb novelist and while his latest book is perhaps a little less complex than some of his earlier works it is nevertheless highly readable. Anyone reading A Hero in France and enjoying it will have a treat delving into his earlier books. You get the feeling that this book could be the one to be made into a movie.
