Product Description

Product Description

This beautifully observed character study was one of Ray s earliest original screenplays. En route to an award ceremony, a famous and egocentric Bengali movie star finds that he is compelled to re-evaluate his life after encountering a disapproving young journalist.

One of my most favourite Satyajit Ray movies. The acting by Uttam Kumar is possibly one of his best output. A real shame that the blu ray is not available in India, also being a Region B disc is not compatible with Blu ray players being sold in that country.

This may not be among the greatest of Ray's film, but it is not a minor film either. With Ray nearly everything he did was of great interest and I suspect this, as it deals with a movie star on his way to Delhi to collect a prize, will appeal to a lot of people who aren't Ray aficionados! This restoration is glorious, and it can easily take its place among great movies set almost entirely in trains! The ensemble cast is very good indeed, and although Uttam Kumar ( a bona fide Bengali movie star, the most famous at the time) gets to play the title role, he has Sharmila Tagore, playing a woman's magazine editor he meets on the train, to contend with. Not all of the film is on the train- there are some flashbacks, as the movie star reflects back on his career and his climb to fame, all of it essential in understanding his story, but still a bit awkwardly fitted in. My only gripe with this release, as with all Artificial Eye releases, is that for the price it sells for, there is nothing in way of extras. Zilch! Compare that to Criterion's releases. Therefore this is a great film to own, in this restored version, but be patient and hope Criterion get their hands on it! I omit a star for that reason alone.

Very clean Blu-ray transfer. "Nayak" may not be one of Ray's "Great Works" but it is still a very good movie. Definitely worth a watch on this crisp Blu-ray.
