WILLIAM LEAST HEAT-MOON, pen name of William Trogdon, is of English, Irish, and Osage ancestry. He lives in Missouri on an old tobacco farm he’s returning to forest. His first book, Blue Highways, tells of a 13,000-mile journey around America on back roads and was on The New York Times bestseller list for 42 weeks. His second work, PrairyErth, is a narrative exploration into a corner of the great tallgrass prairie in eastern Kansas. River-Horse gives an account of his four-month sea-to-sea voyage across the United States on rivers, lakes, and canals. In Roads to Quoz, Heat-Moon sets out for a half-dozen American destinations that have long intrigued him. Here, There, Elsewhere brings together a collection of his shortform reportage about places around the world. His most recent book, Celestial Mechanics: A Tale for a Mid-Winter Night, has been described as a Blue Highways of the mind. It is his debut novel.

I only "met" this author a couple of months ago. I picked up one of my sister's books while I was visiting and asked her about it. She had never read Blue Highways either, and let me bring it home with me (I have since returned it). I was so taken with this author's intense, reader-friendly manner of thought, narrative, explanations, and exposure to so many situations and people. I was just as excited to read Here, There, Elsewhere. If you enjoy books that expose you to new ideas, places, and people, and that challenge you to read with a dictionary within reach, this is a book you will truly enjoy and perhaps keep to reread later.

Here, There, Elsewhere does not live up to being nearly as good as was Blue Highways. This book is a collection of pieces he has written but not published previously in book form so it is not one continuous story. Some pieces were of greater interest to me than others and I skipped over some sections. Yet I read one section aloud to my husband. William Least Heat-Moon surely can spin a phrase and often uses fifty-cent words. I should have read with a dictionary at my finger tips or at least listed the words I was less than familiar with. .
