For those still insisting that rock is dead, South's From Here On In should be the cause for not-inconsiderable confusion. The London trio are the first "indie" band signed to James Lavelle's notoriously hip beats label Mo' Wax, envoys of a new ethic of guitar-stroking, comedown-friendly ambience also practised by the likes of Turin Brakes and Kings Of Convenience. That South are a guitar band isn't to say that they don't occasionally dabble in the traditional hallmarks of the Mo' Wax canon, though; the incidental episodes of "Broken Head" take in dramatic rolls of DJ Shadow-esque drums, fuzzy Money Mark-style keyboard washes and moody orchestral strings torn straight from UNKLE's hymnsheet. Elsewhere, though, From Here On In makes like a celestial meeting of Nick Drake and the Stone Roses, South's delicate finger-picked melodies launching out into the outer realms of the sprawling space-rock jam. "Everyone/ Will come down in time" promises the harmonised chorus of "I Know What You're Like". Not yet, though; From Here On In guarantees a 70-minute trip, so strap yourself in and experience rock reborn. --Louis Pattison
