But there’s a problem; a broodingly handsome, squire shaped problem. Squire Matthew Cleaves, the major landowner in Jane’s home village, fresh from the heartbreak and social embarrassment of his wife running off with another man, has occupied Jane’s thoughts and inflamed her heart for many years. The move to Bath should be the clean break she needs, but when Matthew hears of Jane’s plans to start a new life in Bath, he is determined to follow her to make sure she does it safely. Will Jane accept his help in order to fulfil her dreams of a life outside of the family home, or will the strong social codes of the day thwart her desires? And can she trust herself to follow her dreams, when her heart is begging to be followed, too? And what of Matthew? Will he be able to move on from the controversies that dogged his married life and balance his duty to the estate with the passions of his heart? A page turning, heart thumping romance, Her One True Love will keep you warm on a winter’s night!
Growing up with Matthew Cleaves Jane Danes has always loved him. Her most painful experience was to watch him marry someone else. But that someone has now abandoned him to be with another man. Since his wife's departure Matthew has become an insular grouchy man, abandoning his responsibility as squire to the village. After running into sharp tongued Jane and her sister Monica he visits the local pub only to find himself facing some more home truths from barmaid Maggie. He realises how much his wife’s actions have affected not only him but those he is responsible for. It’s a wakeup call.
Now their elderly mother has died Jane has decided to take up residence in the family’s town house in Bath leaving her sister and brother in law to run their country home, the Marksville Estate. She plans an independent life doing something to help those less fortunate. When Matthew learns of this he's concerned about the move. Despite her protests he insists on accompanying her to Bath to see her safely to the house.
Jane is very independent, totally at odds with her contemporaries who love to shop, take tea and gossip. She resents Matthew’s intrusion in her life but another part of her can’t deny the attraction she still has for him. Despite their tendency to rub each other up the wrong way, the two eventually realise they love each other. But it’s a forbidden love and one which has no future when he still remains married to his wife.
Matthew Cleaves has always put the people of Bidderstone first before himself and his life, then again that is what his father expected of him as the squire. When Matthew married Elizabeth, he never expected that his wife would have an affair with another and leave him, making him withdrawn and unable to focus on his work. When Jane announces that she is to move to Bath with her maid, everyone is shocked even more so Matthew who doesn't even know how to react to the news of possibly losing Jane from his life forever.
After Jane arrives in Bath, it doesn't take her long to feel at home and have a passion to help children who are without in the worst parts of the city. When she needs Matthew's help with getting the job she is hesitant to ask as she knows that he would become a part of her new life, something which she didn't really want. Something shifts in both Jane and Matthew's relationship causing their feelings to come out in a dangerous way that would go against the vows that Matthew made and Jane's pride in her new life. This makes them realise what they knew all along and how it will change their lives as they know it.
My favourite character would have to be Jane, she is so strong and it made her seem so sure of herself even though she still has moments when she is unsure. With her independent streak and loveable nature, she is someone who people could look up to and you are rooting for her to get what she wants in her life as she deserves it.
Her One True Love is a heartbreaking story about love, friendship and finding your place in life. With the passion, love and moving story, it tells you about how sometimes your one true love is in front of you all along. If I had to sum this book up in three words, they would be Inspiring, Captivating and Sweet.
