Look, spanking books can tread on dangerous ground, and it is a fine line between domestic discipline and abuse. By its nature, it is non consensual punishment, so it must be handled tastefully, and not solely as a driving force behind the plot. It is not in the world of BDSM, which is in its basic tenants, safe and consensual, which I would never apply either term to this book. I really was disappointed in this author. I don't get the good reviews. Let's say her injuries are just a plot hole, overlooked due to lack of editing. The hero's constant disregard for her welfare as anything other than a breeder, even really until the end of the book, shows him to be the villain. A better story would be the heroine escaping and finding love with a hero that placed value in her and didn't think shackling her ankle to the bed during the day and keeping her prisoner until the end of the story was in any way deemed acceptable.
I finished the book, so I won't seek a refund, but I think Ashe Barker is off my buy list of authors now.
Spoiler: The last scene in the book is FIVE years later they finally say I love you to each other, and guess what?? It's a surprise to the characters! They didn't even know.
My biggest problem with this book is that AFTER Phahlen finds out that Caria is pregnant with his daughter he starts to call her his human slut. Really? Never before is he derogatory in his language like this, so after he finds out she's pregnant it feels wrong.
