Tom Selleck has spent his entire career after Magnum P.I. making entertaining movies critics hate and the public loves. Here is one you may have missed from director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Tender Mercies). It is gently moving and amusing, with some hysterically funny moments along the way.
Tom Selleck is mystery writer Phil Blackwood and William Daniels of TV's St. Elsewhere fame is his long time best friend and editor Sam. Blackwood hasn't had a bestseller in some time and has been living on his reputation to long. He needs something to break his writers block, and he may just have found it in beautiful Romanian Nina (lovely Paula Porizkova). He meets the accused murderer in court, watching trials for inspiration, and decides to become her alibi.
James Farentino has a nice turn as the cop who knows Blackwood is lying and decides to keep an eye on things so Blackwood doesn't get killed! Once Blackwood takes her to the estate his Peter Swift mystery novels have paid for he uses every situation to propel the new story he's writing and it's a hoot! As Blackwood turns every situation into fodder for his fictional Peter Swift you'll find youself laughing hard at Selleck's voice over as he writes.
Some very tough looking Europeans are after her and he becomes more paranoid and begins to suspect the child like innocence of Nina, who he is falling for, may be an act. There are some hilarious moments as he begins to wonder if she's out to kill him and William Daniels as his buddy Sam gives fine comic support.
But cop Farentino knows these guys are in over their heads.
This is gently moving and charming, with some very fine performances. A pony tailed Patrick Wayne and Tess Harper as Blackwood's very worried family add some nice moments to this entertaining film.

I enjoyed this film as a teenager and still do now. It is just very funny and sweet with it and Tom is gorgeous and well used for his comic/macho talents - he sends himself up beautifully. Her Alibi [DVD] [1989] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

A gem of a movie that only stumbles at the end. Some beautiful scenes though, the sensual haircut, the barn rescue and the archery. This has been one of my wife's favourites since we saw it in the nineties, I am glad to finally be able to get it on region 2.

a very good film from start to finish,
a must have for any collector of film,
the story is about a writer who is finding
writing hard due to his lack of inspiration,
he then gets involved with a woman who has
been accused of murder by providing her
with an alibi [hence the title] but
nevertheless, is a very good film quite funny
and ever so dramatic, well worth the watching,
william

Have seen this film several times over the years and it still makes us laugh as much as it did the first time we saw it. Its a gentle romantic comedy that has several ( in our opinion) side splitting scenes-too many to go in to too much detail but Tom Selleck's commentary (you'll know what i mean if you see the film) is funny.

I've watched this movie many times on DVD and have to say it's one of my all time favourites. It has some histerically funny moments, daft paranoias and heart warming romance.

It's a great film.

You can offhand type this a typical late 80's movie (1989).
Anyway this flick proves that one always needs to stay throughout the the whole film to make up one's mind definitively.
Tom Selleck and Paulina Porizkova are cast ideally, as well as the other actors in this romantic intrigue.
Moreover the enthralling music by George Delerue, in direct combination with the according up-tempo photography, enhances every scene to its perfect momentum.
All prementioned details make it one of the best romantic action-comedies since 1980 .
Tom Selleck, casted down as the 80's serial-MAGNUM-epigon, proves here to be capable of cutting his cherries in the "real cinema-world",sadly it was a short lived thought seeing "Friends" and "Las Vegas".
Nevertheless, being this a typical 80's-vehicle, whithout all the technical cellphone and computer-disturbances; makes it a great movie for the whole family with a major music-soundtrack, with a closing hit by Randy Newman ("Falling in love").
All this more to shame it is so hard to get a region 2-DVD, momentarily.
