Product Description

Product Description

The unique sound of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain is an ideal match for the choral music of Henryk Mikoaj Górecki, music of a monumental radiance which demands a huge and rich sonority. Alongside the ever-popular Totus Tuus, this resplendent recording also contains his 1972 Psalm setting Euntes ibant et flebant, and two recent works here receiving their premieres on disc: the luminous Lobgesang and the thrillingly massive Salve, Sidus Polonorum, for choir, organ, piano and percussion.

Review

Gorecki may not be a minimalist in the strict sense of the term, but his choral works, in these beautiful interpretations by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain under Mike Brewer, are all about deriving maximum impact from minimal material. This is most evident in the ingenious simplicity of "Euntes Ibant et Flebant", the forest of harmonies growing from a basic three-note seed: it's performed with a consummate poise which allows this sublime sound to float heavenwards. The minimalism reaches its apogee in the final section of "Salve, Sidus Polonorum", where he demonstrates the ability to derive momentum from the repetition of the single word "Alleluia". Breathtaking --The Independent

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Compilation 12 Jun. 2012
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com

The choral music of Henryk Górecki fortunately is being performed more regularly of late and this recording by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, conducted by Mike Brewer is excellent. The entire album is now available (previously only excerpts on MP3 were available), and the sound of the recording is rich and spacious.
Gorecki may not be a minimalist in the strict sense of the term, but his choral works are all about deriving maximum impact from minimal material. `This is most evident in the ingenious simplicity of "Euntes Ibant et Flebant", the forest of harmonies growing from a basic three-note seed: it's performed with a consummate poise which allows this sublime sound to float heavenwards. The result is breathtaking.
The tracks on this album are as follows:

Euntes Ibant et Flebant, Op. 32
Lobgesang, Op.72
Totus Tuus, Op. 60
Salve, sidus Polonorum, Op.72
Per merita sancti Adalberti (Through the merits of St Adalbert),
Swiety Wojciechu Patronie nasz drogi (St Wojciech, Our dear patron)
Salve, sidus Polonorum (Hail, star of the Polish people)
Amen, Op. 35

5.0 out of 5 stars A new Górecki choral delight ! 3 July 2013

Like Bruckner's Górecki's music moves slowly. First, the composer presents a musical texture and then extends it for a while. Next, there is often a moment of silence. Then another texture. Not all the music follows this plan, but Górecki does this far more than anybody else I can think of since Bruckner.

This new choral recording is very well done. The music is devotional, and very moving.
