Product Description

In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought highly praised performances from leading contemporary actors - HENRY V [1979] Insulted by the Dauphin, the newly-crowned Henry V gathers his troops for war. But Henry must convince his men that he has left his wild days behind, and prove himself as a leader. Henry V tells a tale of intrigue and betrayal, courtly romance, and a heroic battle against outrageous odds. The lead, played here by David Gwillim, is one of the most coveted of roles with inspiring lines including the St Crispin's Day speech.

It is always useful to see different versions of the play and this is an excellent version to look at with students who are studying the play. Although some students find this version a little dated, many enjoy seeing it; the fact that it is in period costume adds to the interest for them. It is useful to compare this version with that where Richard Branagh plays the part of Henry V. One portrayal is very understated and the other very dramatic. This is a good, solid depiction of the play, but it is not one that always appeals to the younger audience, though it does have much to commend it.

The acting is good in this 1979 BBC production, as can be expected. It is particularly interesting to see how this 166-minute BBC version differs from the more famous Laurence Olivier version of the 1940's. I bought the BBC productions for their close adherence to the original texts; I notice much more to the story with this BBC version, which is not surprising as it is approximately 29 minutes longer than the Olivier version. I was somewhat unconvinced, however, by Henry's justification(s) for military actions in France. This is not due to any faults in the acting, but simply a question arising from the content of the play itself.

If you don't mind watching plays' that have what I call heavy content then this is well worth watching and for the price it is good value.
