I wanted to switch from using my Desktop PC with dual displays to my Macbook Pro instead and this works a treat. It feels nicely built and matches the Macbook well and the vertical docking frees up desk space. If you're going to use it this way, it's worth checking what inputs your screens have and buying the right cables. My screens have DisplayPort inputs (as well as all the others) so I needed to buy a couple of Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort leads as the Henge outputs are the same as the Macbook Pro, i.e. two Mini DisplayPort, USB and headphones. The headphone output doesn't seem to allow me to use my Apple headphones with Mic as well so I'll need a work around for that.

I have read that some people have had WiFi issues but I haven't noticed any loss in performance.

The dock is smart and has a solid metal chassis. What it provides is short extension cables for each of the ports on the left side of a current macbook, with the exception of the magsafe power cable. The male end of each extension cable is clamped into position by set screws which are under a removable rubber trims strip. The magsafe power supply can also be clamped in and two adaptors are supplied for this, However you will need to fix/remove the power supply cable every time you use the dock or, more likely, you would have to buy a second power supply which is left permanently in place. Once it's set up you just drop the macbook into the dock and it's connected to all cables, provided you only want to use the connections on the left side of the macbook. Removal from the dock is equally simple.
The dock is essentially a cable management system which saves you having to plug in up to 5 cables individually, i.e.1 x power, 2 x Thunderbolt, 1 x USB3 actnd 1 x audio line out. However the cables will still be trailing across your desk unless you have a neat cable routing solution. It does have a smaller footprint than the macbook so saves some desk space.
What you do need to know before you buy this is that the wifi really doesn't work with the macbook closed and also, if you shut down while in the dock, you can't power up again without taking the macbook out of the dock and opening it. The wifi issue can be circumvented by buying a USB or Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor, provided you are cabled or you work near the router, or you can use an external USB wifi adaptor
You may also need to adjust the position of the connectors in the dock to ensure the macbook slots in without undue force and, if the clamping screws aren't set tight enough, the connections can push out when the macbook is being dropped in.
I would consider one of the single cable solutions by Belkin, CalDigit etc. before making your decision to buy this.

Before you buy the Henge vertical docking station for your MacBook pro there are some pros and cons that are worth considering. This is a great product, but it won’t be to everyone’s taste.

    Pros:

The MacBook Pro and the Henge dock compliment one another beautifully. Henge has managed to create something that Apple might have made itself, had it wanted to get into the dock business.

The fit is very snug (so any kind of case or skin on your MacBook will render the dock useless), and the MacBook is nicely cushioned by a rubberised seal so there’s no chance of wear on the MacBook’s casing. The aluminium of the dock is not identical, but complimentary to the Macbook Pro, and the look of the two paired together, the Macbook standing on one edge in it’s docking “foot”, is great.

Cables trail behind the unit, keeping them neat and tidy and offering easy access to any of the ports on the side of the MacBook that’s placed in the dock - essentially the Henge acts as a port extender for the two lightning ports, power, USB3 and audio.

    Cons:

But there are one or two issues….

By far the biggest problem is the power situation. Your MacBook will not operate with the lid closed unless it has mains power. That means you must use the small allen key and some plastic clips (provided) to insert your existing magsafe power cable into the space provided in the dock. Once the cable is in the right place, a retaining bolt is tightened to keep everything where it should be. There are two issues with this solution: First, it’s fiddly and although I consider myself to be pretty handy with this kind of thing, it still took two frustrating attempts to get the magsafe connector in the right place so that when docked, the MacBook had power. The second obvious problem is what to do when you take your MacBook out and about with you. Your choices appear to be a) unscrew everything so that you can take your power cables with you, or b) buy a second set of power cables. If you chose the former, prepare for some serious frustration (docks are supposed to be easier than this, and clearly the power cable solution in play here is supposed to be semi-permanent). On the other hand, if you chose the latter you’ll need to add about £65 to the cost of the docking station. Hardly an ergonomic solution.

The second problem is audio. The default position is that when docked, the “headphones” socket is in use. This means you will need a means of playing audio via cable, as the MacBook is designed to cancel out other sound outputs when the headphones jack is in use. The only other option is to delve deep with your allen key and disconnect the headphones jack completely. It’s not the end of the world, but I can’t help thinking that there might have been a better way. It’s certainly a compromise solution.

The other issues are far less problematic. The first is that the words “Henge Docks” are very prominent on the side of the unit. It’s not a deal breaker, but I would have liked to see a more discreet logo. Additionally, it is worth noting that any MacBook will run slightly hotter with the lid closed and docked in this way, so be prepared to have a slightly harder working fan if you are taxing the MacBook’s processor while it is docked. Finally, remember that the second USB port and the HDMI port is on the edge of the MacBook that sticks up in the air. There’s no problem with that, per se, but you might not like a trailing cable if you want to use either port. On the subject of that HDMI port, please also remember that connection from the dock to a monitor is via lightning or a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI cable (available very cheaply).

    Summary:

If you want to save some space on your desk while you connect a monitor to your MacBook, and/or you want the look that the Henge dock provides, this is a great option. The MacBook works just fine in the closed position, docked, and it will wake for bluetooth activity without trouble. I’ll admit I am annoyed that I need another set of power cables, but I love the look and the space I get back on my desktop so much that I’ll live with it.

Blocks almost all external wireless signals. My 2.4 GHz WiFi is completely unreachable(*), regardless whether the dock is 10cm or 10m from the station, and whichever way it's turned, I've tried all combinations. 5 GHz WiFi works - I haven't measured the speed, but guessing it's drastically down. My bluetooth keyboard has to be less than 30cm from the dock, otherwise there's up to 0.5s delay while typing.

It's great ergonomically, but can turn your Macbook Pro into a brick, unless you use cables for everything.

(*) - Just some detail, I can connect to my 2.4 GHz WiFi while undocked, everything works, the moment I dock it, it stays connected to WiFi, but pinging the router only returns every 20th ping on average and with 1000-5000ms roundtrip times.

Really nice. Have been using this for a week now and it's exactly what I was looking for. No issues setting up and having removed and re-docked my 15 inch macbook pro retina several times in the last week, no problems at all around loose connections or anything of that sort. Easy to remove and every time I re-dock the external connections (including power) work without issue.

I will say I just use mini displayport connections for my 2 external monitors, so I can't speak to how this might work with actual thunderbolt cables. That said, using the mini displayport, usb and power ports/cables works perfectly for me. The docking station itself is heavy, sturdy and looks great. I ordered this apprehensively based on some of the negative reviews, but I have nothing negative to say about this docking station after using it for a week :)
