I had several reasons for reading this book. The first was that I had recently met the author and life coach, Tim Watkins, at a life coaching session set up by a friend of mine. The second was that after studying psychology, having vague occasional desires to become a clinical psychologist and generally being interested in mental health I thought to myself: okay, so instead of cramming all the symptoms of each disorder in the official Diagnostic Manual and every law under the Mental Health Act to frantically revise for an exam, how about I have a read of some practical, applicable advice. The third, and most important one for me, was that a good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with depression, and I was shocked to realise that I still did not have a strong sense of the "correct" thing to do to help.

This book was amazingly insightful and provided practical, memorable advice and actions you can adopt to help someone going through mental health problems. Tim Watkins provided information on a variety of disorders from phobias to depression; on each topic he clarifies the experience for the individual and what a close friend or stranger could do to help. A great deal of information is provided in manageable chunks, with information put into bullet points and segments to avoid the reader being bombarded. Tim also provided several case studies as examples of signs and behaviours to look out for to help you apply this knowledge in a more applicable scenario. The aspect of this book that I enjoyed the most was the detail that went into helping the reader understand the perspective of someone experiencing mental health issues.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I downloaded it onto my Kindle. I just felt that since mental health problems can affect anybody, including people I know, then being more aware of these issues would make sense. But this is a very readable book, jargon-free, and homing in on the very things I needed to know. Now I understand what conditions such as depression, anxiety, and manic depression actually are, and how they might show themselves in the people around me. And if or when that happens - and this is the really important bit - I will have a much better idea of what to do or say.

I recommend this book to anyone who lives, works, or socialises with other people - which is just about all of us, isn't it?
