Nina is half-vampire and half-human and is part of a secret (American) government department which takes out the supernatural protagonists of crime in order to protect the rest of society. She has been doing this for years but has recently returned to her home town in order investigate her background further and reconnect with what is left of her family.

The premise is interesting and Nina is a grown woman who knows her powers and the world in which she lives so we don't have to go through the coming of age thing. Of course, it turns out that she doesn't know as much about the world she lives in as she thought and her background proves to be very complicated. Along the way she meets a hunky but human FBI agent to whom she is very attracted.

The premise of this book has a lot of potential and some of it is realised in this novel. Nina is an attractive and capable character and her world is an interesting one. Max is a particularly interesting character and their "relationship" is very well done. There are some other interesting characters including Nina's aunt, the local drunk, and Frankie the vampire.

I enjoyed reading this novel as I found that it flowed well and had some exciting moments. I was disappointed, however, that there wasn't more about the government agency and how it worked and I did think that with a childhood immersed in this stuff Nina should perhaps have known more about what was happening. I feel that the book is heading towards a love triangle for Nina and I am very tired of this with female main characters in the genre, although I think that it is well done here. I also thought that some important but lesser featured characters such as Dr O needed a bit more fleshing out.

The story starts (after a prologue which I'll talk about in a minute) with Nina working in a bar in Providence. A cute guy comes in, but she's quickly distracted by the guy who snarls at her then tries to slit her throat. Thankfully, since Nina is part vampire, she heals quickly enough that it doesn't cause a big problem, and in the chaos, the cute guy turns out to be a cop, working for the FBI. By the end of chapter one, I was hooked.

Apart from the attack on her in the bar, there are also several gruesome murders in the city. Nina investigates, and discovers that a blade used in the attacks looks the same as the one the vampire attacked her with at the bar. Even more interesting, she owns a blade that looks almost the same, which was given to her by her late father. She begins to try tracking the killer vampire across the city, amidst a turbulent relationship with Max, the FBI guy. (Do they want to date, or is she a suspect in his investigation? And the classic, what if he finds out the truth about her?)

There were a couple of things I didn't like in this book. The prologue was interesting: we see Nina fighting off some vampires with the help of Frankie, her best friend & also a vampire. You get a lot of information about why they are killing these vampires and the situation in that city (Newark). I enjoyed reading it, thinking it was set up for the main story. However, no. Nothing about these vampires or the situation in Newark links in with the rest of the story at all. Yes, it gives you an idea of what her usual monster-hunting job involves, but I think you could get enough of an idea about that from the rest of the story.

This book kept popping up on my recommendations list for ages so eventually I broke down and bought it. I am so glad I did! I really enjoyed it. It was well written and the characters have been well created and interact really well with one another. The story has been well thought out and goes along as a good pace, there is a lot of action with a sprinkling of romance. This is not a romance though so if you are looking for romance to be the main event, then this probably isn't for you. There is a good mix of different supernatural creatures and a different but likeable main character. Nina is rough around the edges and has some emotional issues due to her background but she is tough with a caring side. She isn't a damsel in distress!

I liked it so much that I downloaded and read book 2 straight away. I want book 3 Karen Greco :D hopefully it will come out soon!

Typical urban fantasy stuff really, but I found the romance not particularly interesting and the baddies not very scary. the main character is slightly cliched and not that easy to sympathise with because she is a bit aloof I felt. The surprise, you're also a witch element in the middle feels a bit cringed and it seems like Nina isn't very in control of what's going on. By the end I got a bit bred and skipped to re lay chapter.
Overall I would recommend it for diehard urban fantasy fans to fill the time between the latest books released from series with more bite, but don't expect to be wowed.

Where to begin?

This book is obviously the start of a series.

We're kinda plonked into it hitting the ground running so to speak and to pick up bits and pieces to fill some background gaps that i think will be continued in the next books to come.

Nina is our heroine, and a half vampire. she is part of a top secret team called Blood Ops who basically go around dealing with any problems supernatural. We only met 2 of the team, and the 3rd in the last few pages, so again, i think theres room in the follow up books to expand on this.

This first book deals with Nina returning to her home town to try and live normally among humans. She owns half of a bar with her Aunt Babe, left to her by her parents who were sadly murdered. This is the main storyline - Nina wanting to deal and kill the vampire who took them from her.

Alot of short info to keep in mind, like Nina can now see ghosts who can jump into her body to talk to her, which she hadnt before, she doesnt need to drink blood, but does everynow and then get cravings....and the newest - she discovers shes half witch aswell, which she had no idea about and never learnt anything to do with witches, but i think that will be explored further.
theres a demon mayer. An FBI agent who looks like by the end wont be JUST an FBI agent again.

Its a good story. Theres something niggling me about it, not sure what. I liked it, but something is making me hesitate in loving it. Maybe that might change after a few books in. An interesting read, characters well described and revelations come when the arrive with Nina, so we dont know until she does, which i prefer!

Definetly give it a try!
