PLOT…Hellboy and a rookie B.P.R.D. agent in the 1950s are sent to the Appalachians, where they discover a remote community dominated by witches and led by the sinister local demon, the Crooked Man.This movie has really been hit hard by critics as usual destroying any chance of the movie doing well at all, but it’s really not that bad! I went in with very low expectations so actually found it to be very refreshing and quite enjoyable. Put aside what you have seen before in previous movies the crooked man is more like off the pages of a graphic novel, a very dark and twisted story involving witches and demons and black magic, there is still the occasional humour but this is mostly serious and allot more scary than previous outings! The cast is decent, Kesy is actually not a bad Hellboy and the make-up was fine! The movie has a slower pace with lighter action but still it’s a very cool and different version of Hellboy more like his comic origins and worth checking out if you’re a fan! Great use of creepy music throughout too, don’t listen to bad reviews see for yourself you might be surprised but go in knowing your in for something darker and more sinister! And there is no after credit scenes.Blu-ray and 4K discs have a great picture quality.Features include many good interviews and B-Roll footage (142mins approx)Running time 1hr 40mins. Region FREE. English language movie, English subtitles.Rated 15 for horror violence and mild gore. 2024.The 4K edition comes with a nice double sided poster and 4 postcards.

    Forget the horrible commercial comic book lash of the last THREE films!, & embrace this welcome new direction for this Dark Horse icon. Hellboy's latest adventure "The Crooked Man", is not just darker, but breathlessly sinister! It's only downfall, (being picky) is the muffled sound quality in spaces... causing the "speech" to some times slur into each other. However, the gloomy gothic atmospheric feel of the film more than make's up for that "glitch!" Some thing the Dark Horse comic book rivals of DC & Marvel should take note of if they wish to keep enhancing their own comic book film ventures! So a BIG well done to director Brian Taylor & creator Mike Mignola for a fantastic movie! ...."This is without doubt the right path to tread with any future Hellboy flic's!"

    Having seen all previous Hellboys,I had great expectations for this.all the great write ups and the other feedbacks.What we have here is a boring rushed story,rediculous and confusing storyline.Some really boring special effects with annoying boring bad creatures,zombies,ghosts,spiders etc,put them altogether and we have a terrible movie.At about an hour and 25 minutes,short running time too.This couldve done with another half hour more creatures and scares.We,re back to the "oh crap" from Hellboy but you know,I think he was meaning "The Movie."I loved Hellboy 1 & 2.3 went into another direction,which by the way I thought was a very good movie,but this,im afraid to say is absolutely awful.i dont give plots away,but plot?Confused.com.What a shameful waste of time.

    A new movie for comic character Hellboy. A demon who works for an organisation that fights monsters and the supernatural. Previously seen on films with Ron Perlman in the lead of two versions. Then David Harbour in another one.

    This doesn't really do enough as a movie to make it work well for someone with no familiarity with the character. But you'll probably only watch if you have that, so it shouldn't be a problem.

    This is an adaptation of a specific comic story called 'The Crooked Man.' Which is set in 1959 and sees Hellboy plus a colleague who is a researcher and has no field work experience get stuck in a backwoods area. Where evil lurks. Good job Hellboy is on the case....

    I've not read this specific Hellboy comic. Shocking, I know. So many comics, so little time.

    Anyway, this is also not a big budget film. Thus it has a small cast and not many locations.

    The plot sees the characters heading further towards evil. And facing problems along the way.

    It does well for a low budget. You won't really notice that much as it's got such a small cast and a few locations. Some of the effects are practical ones and pretty good. Some are cgi and it's not too bad as far as that goes.

    Actor Jack Kesy plays Hellboy. He gets the part right. He does show all that you would expect from the character.

    The film does try to create atmosphere. Some of the location work is very good, with excellent and atmospheric shots of the woodlands.

    The actress playing his colleague is good. She is a reasonably well rounded character. And I liked the actress who plays a witch. She was really memorably wicked in the part.

    Two problems with this though:

    Accents. Some of the cast, in particular one main character, have strong accents. Which go with the rural area location. But I did find them a bit hard to hear at times as a result.

    Also: the music. The music in this film drove me up the wall. It's trying hard to be unsettling. It's not. It's horribly intrusive. It's like hearing a very bad piano and violin tuner at work. It goes on far too much at times and it does make some of the dialogue hard to hear also.

    There are points when it works at what it is trying to do. Largely when the music stops. But the middle of the film drags during all this. When the characters are spending too much time reacting to threats rather than acting. They start doing more of the latter in the final quarter and it gets a little bit better as a result.

    The ending two scenes are quite good also, and an effective end to it.

    Not bad. Full marks for effort. But unfortunately the music issue made this is a frustrating viewing experience for me. The kind of thing you give seven and a half out of ten to. Maybe if I was more familiar with the comic I would have enjoyed it more. So if you are, I think you will.

    The dvd begins with two trailers. You can skip these via the skip button on the dvd remote.

    There are no extras.

    It might be close to the comic books from what I hear but I doubt the comics were so dull and lifeless. It has a couple of good moments after a promising start but otherwise it was painful to endure. There seemed to be no real plot, character development or narrative thrust towards a particular goal or against a dangerous threat. Rather than going anywhere it relentlessly stalled on monologues, flashbacks, dream or hallucination sequences, sitting or wandering about chatting. The sparse and brief action scenes had no real punch to them. The misty folk-horror flavour was not scary or engrossing. The music would have been apt for an art film but if this thinks it's high art then it is missing the mark by a long way. The year is not quite over for me yet but this is by far the worst and most disappointing film I've seen in 2024.

    First off, I'm in the US and had this imported from the UK for the 4K version and the DVD with the bonus features. I was concerned not being able to pay the DVD for the bonus features. I'm happy to say it plays on my PS5 just fine.

    This is my favorite Hellboy movie. If you approach watching this movie like it's an indie B horror movie I'll think you'll be better off. Some of the CG could have been better but I think it's fine as there isn't too much. I think Jack Kesy is Hellboy.

    I love the del Toro movies but they take inspiration from the comics and del Toro had his own vision. I'm a big fan of the Hellboy comics and the various spinoffs and have read basically everything. This movie is an adaption of The Crooked Man story and does it justice. There are some additions and changes but it's the best adaptation of the comics. Some scenes in the film are recreations of the panels. Brian Taylor wanted this to be Mike Mignola's Hellboy on film and I feel he succeeded.

    I hope we get more Hellboy films like this.
