Cracking follow up to the original masterpiece, that manages to be both more epic, yet maintain the more intimate dysfunctional family feel of the first. Inventive, disturbing, surreal and wonderful, with great performances from a (mostly) returning cast. It only sets one foot wrong- i'll allow viewers to decide which foot and when- but a truly fantastic horrotlr sequel. And how many of those actually exist?

The biggest benefit of this sequel was that most of the cast from the original were able to return sans Andrew Robinson. The sequel continues right off the bat from the first movie with our central character Kirsty now confined in a psychiratic ward. But she has a problem, the doctor following her case wants a taste of hell. So here we go again.

The first half of the movie is a little goofy but it never bores, the doctors side kick for example should never have been in the film, his presence even brings a lighthearted mood to affairs not good for a Hellraiser movie. But it is the evil Dr Channard and his love for all things hell which gives this sequel its edge.

The second half of the movie is incredibly frentic and often scary not to mention filled with utter dread and that's what hell should be, right? We also get a backstory on Pinhead and the cenobites and the puzzle box. Effects wise, it seems all very 1980s and a modern audience would have to look past this. Gory in places and very downbeat in others, Hellraiser 2 certainly isn't as good as Clive Barkers original but runs it pretty close.

An aurua of grief and loss resides over this film, just observing the wet tear filled eye of Ashley Lawrence's Kirsty as we hear Pinhead say: "the sweet suffering" captures the mood perfectly. Director Tony Randel had just broken up with his transatlantic girlfriend while shooting, so his mood of bittersweet heartbreak permeates the film. Great physical special effects and performances from all. This Anchor Bay release is great value as it includes featurettes and commentaries from the cast and crew.

The long awaited sequal to the famous Hellraiser is finally here, and I am spellbound - I loved it!!! Though you may notice that the Female Cenobite is played by a different actress (Barbie Wilde), the Cenobites are as brilliant as ever. Pinhead dilivers his lines wonderfully, and comes out with some wonders like "Your suffering will be legendery even in Hell" and "We have eternity to know your flesh".
Kirsty from the original Hellraiser is back, and in the Channard Institute, owned surprisingly by Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham). A young girl named Tiffany is called upon by him to open the Box after he summons back Kirsty's wicked Stepmother, Julia (Claire Higgins). This time, the adventure takes place in the Inferno, where you will be impressed by the graphics of Leviathan and Hell's Labyrinth.
If you are a fan of Hellraiser, you will not want to miss this. Fantastic!

this is a bad dvd
as simple as that.
i love this film, but there are no extras on this disc.
a trailer does not constitute an 'extra'.
the region 1 version of this movie has a remastered print, THX approved disc. with a featurette and a commentary from the director, writer and ashley laurence.
if you have a multi-region player opt for the region 1 disc instead.

Hellraiser II is one of those rarest of things, a decent sequel to a good first film. It takes the strong elements from the original film (unfortunately including the annoying Kirsty) and builds upon them.

Julia's character in this is an improvement, her time in Hell has improved her skills as a femme fatale. The doctor is also an excellent addition. Once again the cenobites make some good appearances and there are some excellent creepy moments early on in the film.

Like the first film it's showing its age, especially in the special effects. For the most part the model and make-up is good, but the visual effects are pretty ropey.

Still, like the first film it remains a great horror watch, but it all goes downhill after this sequel, so I'll leave the series at this second film.
