It is not often that heroes get to play themselves on Film. Audie Murphy does so with such skill that it is difficult to believe that he did it all for real to become America's most decorated soldier during World War 2. A brilliant and highly recommended war film.

Great film, well acted by the man himself(reminiscing his WWII days) and the rest of the cast. Plenty of action, as well as some sentimental scenes.
Audie Murphy is my true life hero, and I am proud to own this dvd, dedicated to him. All you lovers of war movies will love this movie!!

Audie Murphy showed just how the war was.How friends were made and then lost, how the the green men were turned into fighting soldiers. I was there , every step of the way,he told it the way it was.I found it hard to put down. It made me re-think my views on war.

This is a film made by Hollywood of its day.It was not intended to represent the real horror and brutal experience of combat against a determined and bitter enemy.Audie Murphy tried to influence it to some degree, and it is on record that he objected to it,and distanced himself from its final release.

In truth Audie Murphy was haunted by his wartime experience, his sleep being punctuated by sweat inducing nightmares.Only his tough, objective and cold attitude to the job got him through the experience, but at a huge cost to him personally.

For an accurate expose on the real Audie Murphy, and the effects of war and its cost, read Max Hastings "Warriors"

Absolutely no problems with the the service from the merchant - first rate! I remember seeing this movie on the big screen when I was about 6 - 7 years old. One of the things that has always stuck in mind from that experience was the unit badge on Audie's helmet - white and blue diagonals (don't know why). Also from that moment I've always been a fan of this "all American Hero".

When I read some of the literature about this movie there were comments about how his exploits had been dumbed down otherwise people just wouldn't have believed the film. Having seen the movie again but through much older eyes, I can see why. Even some of the stuff included in film seems far-fetched (but it must be true?). However, for the price and the personal memories this film brings back its worth watching one more time - and I'm still a fan of Audie Murphy!

If you didn't know that this was a true story, you'd swear it was all too Hollywood and probably implausible.
But it is a true story and it marks Audie Murphy as a truly extraordinary man.
Murphy plays himself in this movie, based upon his own book, which tells the remarkable story of his exploits during world war 2.
He was underage when he joined up and was initially thought to be unfit for combat, an opinion he proved wrong many times over as he went on to become the most decorated veteran of the campaign.
But much more than this he had already quit school at age 12 so he could get a job to feed his family!
This is a guy whose selfless dedication and relentless spirit should be an example to every one of us.
Yes the film has its flaws, but they are few and far between. I easilly rate this as one of the best war films ever made!

Amazing story about a really determined American hero, a real-life 'little-big-man', who defied his small stature and less than robust health to become America's most decorated war hero. The film itself is not particularly inspiring with regards to direction, acting, or anything like that, but like the man himself it does get the job done.

These days this film is little known but it is really worth buying.

The story of Audie Murphy's war is never overstated or over dramatised. The fact that the hero (and he was a hero) is played by the man himself adds a tremendous amount of credibility to the film. Apart from a whole host of medals including the Congressional Medal of Honour" Audie Murphy won three purple hearts. Two of the wounds that he received are not even mentioned in the film.

AS a little side note. In the Royal Air Force all airmen had to do a three day course every year on ground defense training. After "To Hell and Back" this course was given the nickname "The Audie Murphy Course"
