I bought this because I have heard the story from lips of Helen Roseveare herself.
My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter loved the story as do I.

HASH(0x9dee5510) out of 5 stars Story about a lesser known missionary 15 Mar. 2010
By NHcheerio - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this and three other books (David Livingstone, Hudson Taylor, and Amy Carmichael) in the Little Lights series. I purchased them for two reasons. One, I was looking for a story about a missionary to read/tell to my church's toddler/preschool Sunday School class. Two, I wanted to get some missionary stories for my personal library for my own two-year old daughter. This book about Helen Roseveare will definitely fill both needs. The story is child-friendly as it briefly describes Helen's childhood, and then goes on to tell her involvement as a medical missionary/nurse who works in a hospital and an orphanage in Africa. As a read-aloud, the story contains an aspect of acting out/storytelling which can easily be incorporated into the story to help keep little ones' attention. I plan to use a box with the items that Helen Roseveare received to keep the focus on the story and what God miraculously provided. As additions to my own library, this (and the other purchased stories) will be great introductions to Protestant missionaries.

These four stories (I can't speak for the others in the series) would be GREAT additions to a church library. They are orthodox, and place great emphasis on prayer, God's will for one's life, and the necessity of personal salvation.
HASH(0x9c94218c) out of 5 stars Great story, a bit less organized in writing than some others 13 Feb. 2014

My 5 year old daughter loves Catherine MacKenzie's books. I am happy to read her these biographies. They consistently start good God- and gospel-oriented conversations and simultaneously let us discuss and learn about history and geography. This story of Helen Roseveare is no different. The story is incredible, a story I was unfamiliar with. Helen Roseveare, a physician and missionary in Africa, needs a hot water bottle to keep a newly born orphan warm. The problem is that in the middle of Africa, when their last bottle breaks, there is no ability to buy another one. One of the other orphans prays, and a parcel arrives with exactly what she prayed for, sent half a year earlier. The story teaches God's love for answering prayer and His sovereignty, even benig able to answer prayers by controlling things well before we ask for them.

Catherine does a good job telling the story, but some of the details seem just thrown in. It seems like there wasn't quite as much thought or editing that went into this book as in her others. My daughter doesn't care though. The story isn't poorly written at all; I just wish it had another editing pass to two. Nevertheless, I am glad we purchased it, and I recommend it for kids ages 5-10.
HASH(0x9c9420f0) out of 5 stars Great book for kids 22 Feb. 2013

This is such a rich and great story made into a simple story for kids. It has the gospel, how Helen wants to devote her life to the Lord, and the excitement of seeing God answer prayer even in the midst of tragedy. My girls get so excited to read and see that God answers prayer, even the prayer of a little girl. It helps them to want to pray and trust God too.

I read this book to my preschool class. We were studying Missions and what it means to be a missionary. It fulfilled my purposes well and the kids "got the message".
