Product description
Classic drama based on the novel 'Washington Square' by Henry James and starring Montgomery Clift and Olivia de Havilland. Catherine Sloper (de Havilland) is a naive young woman and heiress to a considerable fortune, who is swept off her feet by the charming Morris Townsend (Clift) in 19th century New York. Against the wishes of her domineering father (Ralph Richardson), Catherine continues her romance. But is Morris the love of Catherine's life, or are his purposes more sinister, and is he merely after her fortune? Torn between her desire for Morris and her need to placate her father, Catherine is forced to make an agonising decision.

Haviland is transformed by her amourous betrayal from an average ,trusting, socially awkward girl who lacks wit and charm into a heartless lady , her perception that her lover genuinely loves her for only herv self and not her heritage is a heartbreaking moment of transformation.
The predator as the devilishly handsome and glib Clift is an impeccable actor ,but Haviland is a very diverse and consummate actress and with Richardson as the patriarch ,who is mercilessly honest to the point of cruelty to the mediocrity of his only daughter the stage is set for a grand encounter .
Ralph Richardson is the third pillar of this drama as the wealthy doctor in turn of century New York, who is logically correct to his 'scientific medical mind 'but bears a heartless attitude as a father to his only daughter as he constantly compares her to his dead wife in an unfavourable manner -their clashes and exchanges virtually dominate the screen in every frame .
The expressions of Olivia as once heartbroken and than in a vengeful triumph are worthy of every award in the world .
the dialogue is precise ,eloquent and literal,Ralph RICHARDSON tells her daughter -you have no virtues other then the fact you embroider neatly, and this embroidery frame is utilized masterfully by both the masterly director and the precise script as a metaphor to evolve this masterpiece into a memorable psychological study in human behaviour and marital charade as a social mockery .
The ironical view of marriage as a contract between 2 individuals to share an environment of social convenience is harsh, that marriage is a convenience to exploit ,in this case a handsome man offering himself to an average wealthy heiress for the comforts of life ,as he does not have the aptitude to earn himself a living is both a valid argument and also rather a consoling comfort as it does bring some happiness to a lot of humanity ,even if it is attired as a lie.
This ia an anti-thesis to Jane Austin's pragmatic women who meet the social parameters , somewhere in the middle ,this heiress wants only the truth as she has been hurt beyond reconciliation by the 2 men in her life who matter the most to her,and Haviland achieves her artistic heritage in a splash of glory as the lights fade in the dark courtyard of her town house in Washington Square .
A haunting period piece that achieves such relevance even today is a bizarre question ,but it is answered by the magical talent of Olivia De Haviland .
His daughter Catherine, played with great emotional force by Olivia de Haviland, is so cowed and timid she barely functions.
Sloper’s cheerfully widowed sister Lavinia is embodied by that too often neglected star of the thirties Miriam Hopkins, who is so good I wished she had even more scenes.
A suitor comes calling. He is Morris Townsend who is played by Montgomery Clift in only his third film. Watching these four very different actors together is fascinating, as emotions run high when Catherine falls head over heels for Morris, egged on by optimistic Lavinia, while her father reacts with both shrewdness and a heartbreaking lack of paternal love.
De Haviland never had a role quite as rich or as difficult as this one, and her committed, forceful performance nabbed her a second Oscar. {Richardson and Hopkins were deservedly nominated.}
Director William Wyler captures the Jamesian spirit, though at times I yearned for a little less chill precision and a little more ~ recklessness?
But this is Wyler doing James, so that was never going to happen.
See this excellent film and be reminded how subtle an actor Richardson was, and how powerful De Haviland could be when she let rip. As for Hopkins, she almost walks away with the whole thing.
New York, late XIX century (probably around 1880). Catherine Sloper (Olivia de Havilland) is a plain, painfully shy woman whose emotionally detached father (Ralph Richardson) makes no secret of his disappointment in her. She is however certain to inherit a fortune when her father dies. When she meets the charming Morris Townsend (Montgomery Clift), she immediately is taken by the attention that he lavishes upon her. Her aunt Lavinia (Miriam Hopkins) is delighted, but her father on another hand is not pleased at all... And then the film really begins and I will say no more.
This is an adaptation of a play, which itself was an adaptation of novel "Washington Square" by Henry James. The whole story occurs mostly in the same couple of rooms, with just limited forays in other appartments and one ball room - and an occasional glimpse of the street in front of the house. There is only a limited number of characters, as other than the four already named all others appear only in short glimpses. And yet, this story is more tense, more dramatic, more nerve wreaking and more heart-breaking than many great-budget super-productions. Indeed, this film shows, that the unlimited ocean of human soul is traversed by storms of unparalleled power and inhabited by monsters which would scare the tentacles out of Kraken itself...
Olivia de Havilland is AMAZING! She was a helluva of an actress. Montgomery Clift, for whom it was only the third role, barely one year after his debut in "The Search", shines too - albeit his role is actually easier... The wise but terrible Father is played incredibly by Sir Ralph Richardson (OK, yes, he wasn't technically a Sir yet). Finally Aunt Lavinia, an absolutely remarkable person 50% foolish/50% clever is played wonderfully by Miriam Hopkins, who used to be a major star in the 30s, but was at that time on her way out - still, in this film she managed a swan song of epic proportions...
This was the ninth film directed by William Wyler which I saw (including "The dead end", "The letter", "The big country", "Roman Holidays" and "The little foxes") and that only confirmed what I knew already since "Ben Hur", "Jezebel" and "The best years of our lives" - he was one of the greatest Hollywood directors EVER! What a perfect mastery of scenario and actors! Chapeau bas maestro!
This is a splendid, albeit heart-breaking film. I loved every single moment of it and I will definitely keep the DVD for another viewing. ENJOY!
